CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Mohawk Racetrack fans may not have sent her off as their top choice, but there was never a moment of doubt in trainer-driver Rick Zeron’s mind as he guided three-year-old trotting filly Peach Martini to her second straight Gold Final title on Thursday evening.

Fans sent rival Lukes Sophie off as their top choice, but that filly made an early error that sent tote tickets fluttering to the floor like confetti. Meanwhile, Peach Martini trotted smartly away from Post 4 and established herself at the head of the class well before the :27.3 opening quarter.

Through a pedestrian :58.2 half and a 1:27.2 three-quarters, Zeron and Peach Martini sat comfortably on the front end without facing a challenger. Turning for home the reigning Gold Final champ was well in hand and the snooze-worthy second quarter Zeron engineered ensured the Striking Sahbra daughter had lots left in the tank for the sprint to the wire.

Eagle Canada closed well but could only get within a length and a half of Peach Martini, who halted the teletimer at 1:56. Magic Wheel rode along in the pocket behind Peach Martini into third, with Oh Sweet Baby and Shez So Striking rounding out the cheque earners.

Oakville resident Zeron conditions Peach Martini for his partners Michael Katz of Thornhill, Stephen Waldman of Toronto and Rojan Stables of Wilmington, DE. Through a two season career spanning 20 starts the consistent filly, known as Princess’ to her friends, boasts a record of nine wins, seven seconds and one third for earnings of $566,927.

This season Peach Martini has added two Gold Elimination and two Gold Final trophies to her collection, which already included a set of four elimination and one final trophies from her freshman campaign.

Beyond the confines of the Ontario Sires Stakes program this season, the filly has posted a third in a division of the Casual Breeze Stakes and runner-up finishes in her elimination and the final of the Canadian Breeders Championship, all at Mohawk.

Peach Martini will return to the Campbellville oval to defend her title when the three-year-old trotting fillies make their fourth Gold Series stop at Mohawk on Sept. 15.

Ontario Sires Stakes excitement continues at Mohawk on Monday, Aug. 15 with the third $130,000 Gold Final of the season for this year’s two-year-old trotting filly crop. Post time for Monday’s program is 7:10 pm and the juvenile fillies are featured in Race 5.
