CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Gifted two-year-old trotting filly Poof Shes Gone earned her fourth straight victory with a 1:56.2 effort in Gold Final action at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening.
Starting from Post 6, driver David Miller eased Poof Shes Gone away from the gate and was sitting on the outside in sixth when Random Destiny and Riina Rekila reached the :28.1 opening quarter. Heading for the :57.2 half, Ruling Class stepped off the rail and provided a wind break for Poof Shes Gone, but was unable to circle around Random Destiny and had begun to falter by the 1:26.4 three-quarters.
Caught in behind the tiring Ruling Class, Miller tipped Poof Shes Gone out three-wide around the final turn and had moved to within a neck of Random Destiny by the time the fillies reached the top of the Mohawk stretch. Poof Shes Gone effortlessly reeled in the pacesetter and trotted away to a one and one-quarter length victory in 1:56.2.
Pocket sitter Angostura and Emmylou Who, both elimination winners from last week, were also able to circle around the fatigued Random Destiny to earn the second and third-place finisher’s shares of the $130,000 Gold Final purse.
Monday’s victory was the fourth straight for Poof Shes Gone, who captured an elimination and the final of the $525,800 Merrie Annabelle at The Meadowlands in early August before shipping north for her Ontario Sires Stakes debut in last week’s Gold Elimination. Through five starts the talented youngster boasts a record of four wins and one third for earnings of $359,700.
Richard “Nifty” Norman trains Poof Shes Gone for Melvin Hartman of Ottawa, John Fielding of Toronto, Herb Liverman of Miami Beach, FL and David McDuffee of Nashua, NH. The group acquired the daughter of Kadabra and Travelin Superlite at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale for $170,000.
The fifth foal from $298,351 winner Travelin Superlite, Poof Shes Gone became her mother’s richest offspring with Monday’s victory. Among the filly’s successful siblings are $322,795 winner Travelin Lite and $146,768 Travelin Supergirl, who was a Grassroots Champion in her freshman season.
Next up on the freshman filly stakes calendar is the Sept. 7 Champlain Stakes at Mohawk, followed by eliminations for the Peaceful Way on Sept. 14. The $500,000 Peaceful Way Final goes postward on Sunday, Sept. 20. Poof Shes Gone will have her first chance to repeat her Gold Series success on Sept. 29 at Windsor Raceway.
While the Grand Circuit comes to town, Ontario Sires Stakes action takes a hiatus from Mohawk Racetrack. The Campbellville oval does not host its next provincial stake until Friday, Oct. 2, when the three-year-old pacing fillies compete in the last Gold Elimination of their career.
