FRASERVILLE, ON — Fan favourite Prodigal Seelster took full advantage of his inside post at Kawartha Downs on Thursday, cruising to his second straight Gold Elimination win in a track record equaling 1:50.4.

In the rush away from the starting gate, driver Scott Zeron maneuvered Prodigal Seelster from Post 2 onto the rail in third as Machal Jackson and Camaes Fellow battled to a :27.1 opening quarter. Heading for the :55.2 half Zeron sent Prodigal Seelster after the lead and the three-year-old pacing colt was comfortably in control by the 1:22.2 three-quarters.

Camaes Fellow, followed by Twin B Legend and Mach Of Ballykeel rallied up the outside, but could not reel in Prodigal Seelster, who hit the wire three-quarters of a length on top in a sharp 1:50.4, equaling the track record time set by former OSS star Bigtime Ball in 2007. Reigning Gold Final champion Mystician paced into fifth to round out the cheque earners in the $40,000 Gold Elimination.

With Celebrity Citation scratched from the single elimination, all nine colts will make the return trip to Kawartha next Thursday, Sept. 1 for the third $130,000 Gold Final on their 2011 calendar.

David Menary conditions Prodigal Seelster for his father Larry Menary of Cheltenham, Denis Breton of Welland, Kenneth Ewen of Georgetown and Double Or Nothing Stables of Hamilton. Through 12 starts this season the colt has accumulated four wins, two seconds and three thirds for earnings of $262,422. The son of Camluck and Platinum Seelster, who captured last year’s season ending Super Final, has not missed a cheque this season and has been particularly sharp in recent weeks, not finishing worse than third since mid-July.

Thursday’s victory bumped Prodigal Seelster to the top of the three-year-old pacing colt division standings, putting him seven points ahead of rival Mystician. The two sons of Camluck have battled week in and week out for the last two years and arrived at Kawartha on Thursday off a pair of see-saw finishes in the Confederation Cup on Aug. 14 — Prodigal Seelster won the elimination, with Mystician hot on his heels in second, and Mystician finished second in the final, with Prodigal Seelster one-quarter of a length back in third.

Prodigal Seelster will have the post position advantage in next week’s $130,000 Gold Final, landing Post 3 to Mystician’s Post 6. The complete line up for the Sept. 1 Gold Final is as follows:
