INNISFIL, ON — Heading back to Georgian Downs for Saturday’s $130,000 Gold Final, three-year-old trotting colt Majestic Son sports a five race win streak, two track and Ontario Sires Stakes speed records and a growing fan club.
“He’s fun to watch. A lot of people, wherever I go, ask about him,” says trainer Mark Steacy. “I had four people come up this week just to ask if they could come into the barn and have a look at him.”
Majestic Son’s prowess on the racetrack, his physical presence, and Steacy’s willingness to open his stable doors and allow fans to forge a personal connection with the trotter have all contributed to the horse’s popularity. The easy going Majestic Son seems to enjoy all the attention and Steacy says the colt is in a very good place right now as far as his physical and mental condition are concerned.
“He’s real sound, real happy and real healthy right now,” says the Lansdowne resident. “He is with Shawn (Steacy) at the BayCairn Training Centre and they have a five-eighths mile trail that goes down through the woods and up and down hills and he spends half an hour every day on the trail. It has very soft footing, it’s very good for his feet.”
Keeping Majestic Son’s feet in shape has been an ongoing battle for Steacy and his team since the colt’s freshman season and the trainer is hoping that he can maintain the status quo for Saturday’s contest and through the next three weeks. After battling his Ontario Sires Stakes peers in the fourth Gold Final of their season, Majestic Son will take on the best trotters in North America in the Sept. 16 eliminations for the $1 million Canadian Trotting Classic at Mohawk Racetrack.
“The one we’ve been waiting for is the Canadian Trotting Classic,” admits Steacy. “The prestige of the whole race, and the chance to race against the best American-breds; we’re going to find out if he’s that good. Glidemaster is right on his game, Chocolatier is right on his game. If we can make the final it’s going to be an interesting couple of weeks.
“You can say, Oh yeah, he’s the best,’ but you’ve got to prove it,” adds the horseman. “He beat some of those horses before, last year and in the Goodtimes, but the money is on the line this time. We’re going to find out who is real and who is not. I just hope everyone goes into the race healthy.”
While the partners in the Majestic Son Stable and the trotter’s burgeoning fan club are eager to see him tackle the best colts on the continent, Steacy is quick to add that Saturday’s Gold Final is nowhere near a sure thing. In fact, while the Angus Hall son has racked up eight wins in 11 starts this season, he did not capture a Gold Final until Aug. 20 at Flamboro Downs.
“This is not a walk in the park either,” cautions Steacy. “Was It A Dream is a really good horse, and Rob Fellows’ colt (Indiana Hall) has stepped up, he’s really quick off the gate. There are a lot of quality horses in the Ontario program and in horse racing anything can happen, as we found out in Ottawa.”
Majestic Son and regular reinsman Trevor Ritchie will tackle the cream of the Ontario-sired crop from Post 4 in the seventh race on Saturday and Ritchie will be keeping an eye out for Indiana Hall from Post 7 and Was It A Dream from Post 9.
Post time for Georgian Downs’ highly anticipated Saturday evening program is 7:35 pm.
