ELORA, ON — Two weeks ago a trio of Grassroots fillies chalked their name in beside a new three-year-old trotting filly track record at Grand River Raceway, but their claim to fame was short lived as Sarong Hall trotted around the Elora oval two-fifths of a second faster Friday evening.
With veteran reinsman Tony Kerwood at the helm, Sarong Hall floated off the gate and then powered up the outside to take control of the race heading for the halfway marker. Three lengths ahead of the field through most of the mile, the Garland Lobell daughter hit the wire nine and a half lengths on top in a track record 2:00.3.
Peterborough resident Dr. Peter Johnston trains the winner of $109,800 for his partners in Idylwood Stables Inc. and Watkins Equine Inc. of Newcastle. The win boosted the filly’s record to six wins, four seconds and two thirds through 15 starts this season.
Ungava, owned by trainer Ross Henry of Arthur and NGA Powerline of Brantford, claimed the second-place finisher’s share of the $16,580 purse and Serena Seelster, owned by trainer-driver Mark Etsell of Hanover, Larry Clements of Listowel, Chuan Tan of Cambridge and Robert Newton of Walkerton, rounded out the top three.
Ungava’s runner-up finish was just the start of a superlative evening for Ross Henry, as the four-time Johnston Cup winner went on to claim two victories and another second.
Lookit captured her Trillium division for the Henry Stable and Wally Yantz of Bloomingdale with a front end effort in Race 8. With Wayne Henry in the race bike, the Royal Strength filly toured the half-mile oval in 2:01.1, one and a half lengths up on Whatthehecklavec and six lengths ahead of third-place finisher Win Some Way.
Two races later Henry took home 75 per cent of the purse when Kind Gesture hit the wire three-quarter lengths ahead of stablemate Praha. The Henry Stable and Daniel McCann of Parkhill share ownership on Angus Hall daughter Kind Gesture who now has three wins and one second to her credit through six starts.
Dream On Bernie, owned by trainer-driver George Zirnis of Elmira, Tanya Martin of Elmira, Janet Fairall of Windsor and Nancy Holmes of Clinton, grabbed the third-place cheque in Race 10.
The other Trillium Series division went to Gold Series regular Ja El Ginger, who cruised to a 2:01.1 victory over Draven and Tyrone Megabucks. Randy Fritz piloted the Balanced Image daughter to her first win of the season on behalf of trainer Carl Jamieson of Princeton and his partners Joanne Morrison of Beeton, Karl Ungerman of Toronto and Glengate Farms of Campbellville.
The three-year-old trotting fillies do not return to Trillium Series action until Nov. 18 at Flamboro Downs, meanwhile Grand River Raceway gears up for the talented two-year-old trotting colts, who arrive in Elora on Friday, July 22 for Gold Series Eliminations.
