HANOVER, ON — Hanover Raceway fans will enjoy a full serving of two-year-old pacing colts this Saturday as 56 colts battle for a total of $107,401 in seven Grassroots divisions.

With a third-place finish in the Grassroots season opener, Sauble Dewy earned 12 points toward a coveted berth in the post season and Larry Hall hopes the gritty youngster can pick up a few more over his local oval on Saturday.

“He isn’t very big, but he’s a gutsy little fellow,” says the Tara resident. “He gives 100 per cent.”

Bred and raised at Hall’s Sauble Hill farm, the son of Aces N Sevens and Triple Actress has evolved into a far better horse than his owner expected when he started training the colt last fall.

“I didn’t think he’d make it,” admits the horseman. “I have two trotters I thought would have got there before him, but they’re both on grass.”

Heading into round two of the Grassroots program, Sauble Dewy has five starts under his belt. The diminutive youngster finished fourth and second in a pair of two-year-old conditioned events at Georgian Downs in July, third in the July 19 Grassroots season opener at Kawartha Downs, second in an overnight event at Hanover on Aug. 1 and fifth in a maiden at Mohawk Racetrack on Aug. 12.

“He didn’t get away very good, but he paced right through the wire,” says Hall of the colt’s most recent outing, which saw him tour the Mohawk oval in 1:57.2. “He’ll make a racehorse.

“He’s a sound little horse, he’s driving good and he likes to race,” adds Hall. “We’re happy to have him.”

Sauble Dewy will start from the outside Post 7 in the sixth race on Saturday, and Hall says the quick sprint off the gate is not the colt’s forte, so driver Terry Fritz will be looking for a come-from-behind trip for the youngster. The pair face a field of seven that includes one other colt that started in the July 19 Grassroots event, one that started his campaign at the Gold Series level, and five newcomers to the provincial program.

“We’ll go see if we can get something,” says Hall, “And hope we can.”

Post time at Hanover Raceway on Saturday is 7:25 pm and the two-year-old pacing colts will show off their burgeoning skills in Races 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10.
