INNISFIL, ON — Scotty Doesnt Know cruised to the fastest win of six Grassroots divisions at Georgian Downs on Tuesday evening, reaching the finish five lengths ahead of his two-year-old trotting colt peers in 2:00.3.

Starting from Post 4 with Hall of Fame horseman Ron Waples in the bike, Scotty Doesnt Know followed L M Expresso away from the gate and was sitting second by two lengths at the :29.1 opening quarter. By the 1:00.1 half, the colts had reversed their order, with Scotty Doesnt Know leading L M Expresso by two lengths.

Scotty Doesnt Know maintained his two length lead through the 1:31 three-quarters, but rolling off the final turn Waples shifted the Malabar Maple colt into another gear, and the pair powered down the stretch to the five length triumph. L M Expresso fought hard through the final strides to hold off a charging Kenny My Boy and earn the second place share of the $24,000 Grassroots purse.

Mallon was two more lengths back in fourth, while Baylon De Vie, co-owned by Sharon resident John Hayes, rounded out the money earners in fifth.

Guelph resident Waples bred and owns Scotty Doesnt Know, while John Drennan handles training duties. The colt prepared for his Ontario Sires Stakes debut with a pair of qualifiers at Grand River Raceway, finishing second on June 29 in 2:02.4 and posting a 10 length win on July 6 in 2:05.

Once race later Thornton resident Stephen Byron guided Fire Meets Ice to a four and one-quarter length Grassroots victory in 2:01.3, besting In The Bank and Merlincrest. John Bax trains Fire Meets Ice for breeder Al Libfeld of Pickering and his partner Steven Kazman of Thornhill. The chestnut son of Striking Sahbra and $635,887 winner Crown Starlet struggled through two earlier starts this season, but a flawless 2:03.3 qualifying win at Mohawk Racetrack on July 17 put the youngster on track for Tuesday’s success.

Zorgwijk Knight and Paul Mackenzie also used the front end route to claim victory in the third race, fighting hard through the stretch to hold off fan favourite Text Me and earn the neck victory in 2:01. Beckham Seelster rounded out the top three, one and a half lengths behind the duelling leaders.

Blake Curran trains Zorgwijk Knight for Tracey Curran of Burlington and Bob Curran of Smiths Falls, and the horseman prepped the Armbro Ricochet youngster for Tuesday’s event with a steady June 19 qualifier at Flamboro Downs and an overnight test at Flamboro on July 3 where he finished fifth in a 2:03 clocking.

The other three Grassroots divisions went to Snoopy Duke in 2:02.4; Rodeo in 2:01.3; and Hava Kadabra in 2:02.

The freshman trotting colts will make the second stop on their Grassroots tour at Sudbury Downs on Aug. 2. Georgian Downs fans have to wait until Sept. 22 for their next dose of Ontario Sires Stakes excitement, when the Innisfil oval will roll out the red carpet for the three-year-old trotting colts in their second last Grassroots appearance.
