This Saturday night at Mohawk is one of the most highly anticipated on the harness racing calendar with a multitude of rich stakes finals anchored by Canada’s richest Standardbred race, the $1 million North America Cup.
Several Ontario-sired trotters and pacers will be part of the elite action at the Campbellville oval. The $272,100 Goodtimes Final for three-year-old trotting colts has the highest concentration of performers sired by Ontario sires with six. These include two sons of Muscle Mass, Massacaia and Massive Talent, a pair by Kadabra in Verdi and Pasadena Star and one each by Deweycheatemnhowe in See The Wind and Majestic Son who has Harper Blue Chip.
In the $266,000 Armbro Flight final for trotting mares there are four former OSS stars in the hunt in Rockin With Dewey (Deweycheatumnhowe), Angies Lucky Star (Angus Hall), Charmed Life (Majestic Son) and last year’s Horse of the Year in Canada and the U.S., Bee A Magician (Kadabra).
The Ontario-sired hopeful in the $330,000 Roses Are Red final for pacing mares is the Camluck daughter Camille who has earned over $1 million so far in her career.
In the $100,000 Gold Cup Invitational, which spotlights the top free for all pacers in North America, features a trio of Ontario-sired performers in Mach It So (Mach Three), Warrawee Needy (E Dees Cam) and Modern Legend (Modern Art). Among their competition is the richest harness horse of all time, the legendary Foiled Again who has $6.2 million banked to date.
While the rich North America Cup doesn’t have an Ontario-sired starter (aside from the Jeremes Jet son Jet Airway who is the also eligible and will draw in if a horse is scratched), three of the colts racing have dams by Ontario sires. Camluck daughters are responsible for two of the finalists Lets Drink On It and Luck Be Withyou. Grinfromeartoear sired the dam of Ideal Cowboy.
The action gets underway at 6:45 p.m. at Mohawk on Saturday.
