ELORA, ON — Shake That Junk waltzed into the winner’s circle at Grand River Raceway on Monday afternoon with an impressive 1:57.1 victory in the two-year-old pacing filly Gold Final.
With part-owner Jody Jamieson in the race bike, Shake That Junk started from Post 1 but was out-hustled off the starting gate and landed in fifth place on the rail. A Fiesty Affair took the fillies to the :27.2 opening quarter, but she was quickly shuffled aside by fan favourite HF Velma.
In spite of a pedestrian :58 half, HF Velma was all alone on the front end when the fillies passed in front of the grandstand for the second time, but the lull in action was brief as U Make Me Laugh mounted a serious challenge heading for the 1:27.2 three-quarters. Jamieson had popped Shake That Junk out behind U Make Me Laugh, and when that filly failed to sail by HF Velma, Jamieson sent his charge three-wide and took command of the race.
On top by half a length when she turned for home, Shake That Junk cruised down the stretch to a two and three-quarter length triumph. Random Dreamer delivered a solid finishing kick to claim the runner-up’s share of the $130,000 purse, and, after drawing in off the also eligible list when Maddam Luck was forced to withdraw due to sickness, A Fiesty Affair took full advantage of the opportunity and claimed the third-place finisher’s portion.
Cambridge resident Jamieson shares ownership on Shake That Junk with trainer James “Friday” Dean of Campbellville, Dr. David Powell of Campbellville and P and J Stable of Mississauga.
The win was Shake That Junk’s first of the season and boosted her earnings to $95,934. Through her first four starts the Camluck daughter had posted a third in a July 9 overnight event at Mohawk Racetrack, a third in the elimination and fourth in the final of the Gold Series season opener at Georgian Downs, and a second behind HF Velma in last week’s elimination at Grand River.
A $72,000 purchase at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale, Shake That Junk is now the second most successful offspring from 100 per cent producer Diamond Dawn, whose first foal was $236,278 winner Western Maverick.
Six races after the freshman pacing fillies impressed Grand River fans with their skills, their masculine peers stepped onto the track for the $300,000 Battle Of Waterloo. Mimicking Shake That Junk’s off the pace tactics, fan favourite Somebeachsomewhere delivered an impressive 1:55 victory in spite of starting from Post 7.
The Mach Three colt and driver Paul MacDonell hit the wire two and a half lengths up on Fun Of The Game and four lengths ahead of pacesetter Believeinbruiser. Schooner Stables of Truro, NS own the talented Somebeachsomewhere and Jean Louis Arsenault trains the colt, whose first lifetime start was a 1:54.2 track record victory in the Battle Of Waterloo eliminations last Monday.
Ontario’s gifted two-year-old pacing fillies will make their third Ontario Sires Stakes start at Mohawk Racetrack on Sept. 14, while the impressive freshman pacing colts return to Gold Series action at Flamboro Downs this Sunday, Aug. 12.
Provincial action returns to Grand River Raceway on Friday, Aug. 31 with the fourth Grassroots event for the three-year-old trotting colts.
