CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Ontario’s talented two-year-old pacing colts will serve up a second helping of excitement to Mohawk Racetrack fans this Sunday, July 20 as they wage battle in their $120,000 Gold Final and $20,000 Gold Consolation.

Trainer Carl Jamieson will harness three colts in the Gold Final and the Princeton resident is hoping the seven-eighths mile oval will mitigate the outside post positions drawn by Riopelle and Windsong Fortune. For the second straight week Windsong Fortune will be handicapped by the outside Post 10, but this week the Astreos son will have a familiar face alongside him as Riopelle starts from Post 9. The third member of Jamieson’s trio, World Away will start from Post 5.

“I think he’s got the most speed of all of them,” says Jamieson of Western Terror son World Away. “I think he’s likely the best of the three of them right now.”

World Away, a $180,000 yearling purchase from the Lexington Selected Sale, finished a fast closing second to Nebupanezzar in his Gold Elimination last weekend. Jamieson shares ownership on the half brother to $2 million winner Mister Big with Mississauga resident Ken Henwood.

Jamieson, breeder Bob Boyce of London, Matthew Kitchen of Princeton and Herman Robblee of Woodstock share ownership on Modern Art son Riopelle, who also finished second in his elimination, one and three-quarter lengths behind OK Boromir. Windsong Fortune overcame Post 10 in his elimination to finish third behind OK Boromir and his stablemate, only to be rewarded with a second dose of the right hand rail.

The Astreos colt prepped for last week’s Gold Elimination with a runner-up finish in his Bud Light division at Flamboro Downs on June 29 and, between the two starts, has already repaid Jamieson, C And T Stable of Rockwood, Thomas Kyron of Toronto and William Loyens of London the $11,000 they spent to acquire him at last fall’s Canadian Open Yearling Sale.

The other Gold Elimination was awarded to Silver Sunset when Medoland Machoman was ruled to have interfered with L H Remachable in the stretch. John Pentland trains the No Pan Intended son for Niele Jiwan of Burnaby, BC and was delighted to see his lightly rated colt benefit from the judges inquiry.

“It was a really competitive race, and it was a lot of fun too,” says the Dorchester resident. “We got lucky.”

Driver Mike Saftic will steer Silver Sunset from Post 8 in the Gold Final and Pentland expects the youngster will need another dose of luck to earn his second straight victory with the other elimination winners, Nebupanezzar and OK Boromir, drawing Posts 2 and 6.

“If he could somehow get away in the middle. It would be nice not to end up at the back of the field,” says the trainer. “If he gets away mid-pack and picks up some live cover he could maybe get a piece.”

A $70,000 yearling at the Forest City Sale, the half-brother to $235,241 winner Golden Seven gave Pentland glimpses of his ability all winter, but the trainer says what the colt has become most noted for around the barn are his temper tantrums.

“He was a funny horse to break, really hilarious. He would stomp his front feet all the time, he still does it occasionally,” explains the horseman. “He just had this funny way of going about stomping his feet in protest to everything we did.”

Silver Sunset and his Gold Final peers will wage their battle in Race 8 on Sunday, with the Gold Consolation slated for Race 5. Post time at the Campbellville oval is 7:30 pm.
