CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — For the last four months Simply Mavelous has been slaving as an understudy to the province’s top three-year-old pacing fillies, and on Monday night at Mohawk Racetrack she finally earned her moment in the spotlight.
Starting from the outside Post 10, fans did not think Simply Mavelous would have an opportunity to step to centre stage in the $130,000 Gold Final, but when hot early fractions took their toll on the leaders, driver Mike Saftic decided to give her a shot at the leading role.
Milliondollarsmile set the tempo for the Final when she fired out of Post 4 and took the field of nine to a :26.1 opening quarter, then continued to roll through a :53.4 half under pressure from challenger Iola M. After sitting fourth through the early action, fan favourite Michelles Power shifted into gear heading for the 1:22.2 three-quarters, and was on top by a length as the fillies turned for home.
Meanwhile, Saftic and Simply Mavelous landed 12 lengths behind the leaders in sixth from their outside post. Heading for the half, the veteran reinsman tipped Simply Mavelous to the outside and the pair made up 10 lengths through the third quarter before being forced out three-wide around a tiring Iola M. At the top of the stretch Saftic had his charged positioned one length behind Michelles Power, and Simply Mavelous proved to have more gas left in the tank, getting by the favourite to record a three-quarter length win in 1:50.4.
Michelles Power settled for second, while Queen Of Royalty took full advantage of her pocket trip to finish third.
The victory marked Simply Mavelous’s second trip to the winner’s circle in a season that started in the first week of January. Through 24 starts the Western Maverick daughter has now recorded two wins, seven seconds, five thirds, four fourths and two fifths, missing cheques on just four occasions.
Alan Guthrie of Windsor owns and trains the hard working filly, who has earned a total of $196,130 through her sophomore campaign. Simply Mavelous’s second win of the season took four full seconds off the 1:54.4 mile she clocked in her first win; a leg of the Silver Reign Series at Woodbine Racetrack on March 12.
Simply Mavelous and her peers will wrap up their regular season at Georgian Downs on Oct. 23 and 30, before battling in the $300,000 Super Final at Woodbine on Nov. 10.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement continues at Mohawk Racetrack this Saturday, Sept. 22 with Gold Eliminations for the gifted two-year-old trotting fillies and a $130,000 Gold Final for the two-year-old pacing fillies.
