REXDALE, ON — Ontario’s talented two-year-old pacing colts head for Woodbine Racetrack on Thursday, fresh off an impressive 1:53 performance in their first Gold Series Final last week.

Sir Luck comes into the event as the reigning champion and trainer Bill Budd says the Camluck colt recovered perfectly from the blistering mile he delivered at Windsor Raceway in his second lifetime start.

“He raced tough, but he trained down tough all winter and spring. I guess that’s how he did it,” says the Carlisle resident. “He’s a beautiful colt. Right from day one he’s been just great, he’s got a good disposition, a good temperament. He’s like a three-year-old, and he looks like a three-year-old too.”

The $20,000 yearling will attempt to score his second win from Post 6 in the sixth race at Woodbine on Thursday night and Budd says the post will work to Sir Luck’s advantage. The novice pacer had to recover from a break at the start of his June 26 Gold Elimination, coming back to finish second and advance to the Final.

“That’s not bad, that’s like a two or three-hole at Windsor, and they can get away a little better from there too. The rail, it’s tough getting away at Woodbine for trotters and young horses,” he says. “From the six-hole they’re already in motion.”

Budd trains Sir Luck and his stablemate Boulder Creek for the C and I Siegel Racing Stable Ltd. of Brooklyn, NY. Boulder Creek will make his bid for a berth in the July 18 Gold Final from Post 5 in the third race.

After finishing third in his Gold Elimination at Windsor, Boulder Creek was scratched out of the Final due to a mild bout of sickness but Budd says the Pacific Rocket is in perfect shape for Thursday’s contest.

“I could have probably raced him, but it’s a long summer,” says Budd. “If I’d raced him it might have cost me a month.”

Sir Luck and Boulder Creek will face 22 other youngsters looking for a top three finish in the $38,523 Elimination round. Only ten colts will return to Woodbine Racetrack on July 18 for their second $130,000 Gold Final, the top three finishers from each Elimination and one fourth-place finisher drawn by lot.

The two-year-old pacing colts will vie for one of those ten spots in Races 2, 3, and 6 on Woodbine Racetrack’s 7:40 pm program Thursday.
