A big pot of $150,000 was up for grabs in a single Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series event for three-year-old filly pacers on Sunday night at Flamboro Downs, and it was won by Skippin By and driver Randy Waples in 1:52.4.
Jakardez (Trevor Henry) took the field of eight through opening-half fractions of :26.3 and :55.2, but Skippin By, who came first-over out of fourth before the half, would clear to command on the way to the 1:24 three-quarters. From there the 1-9 favourite poured it on, opening up to win by five lengths over runner-up Alibi Seelster (Jody Jamieson). Brookdale Shadow (Chris Christoforou) finished third.
Corey Johnson trains Skippin By, a daughter of Shadow Play, for owners Wall Bros Stable of Marion and Bruce Soulsby of Powell, Ohio. Skippin By has five victories from 14 trips behind the gate this year, and this was her ninth career win. A three-time winner in Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots competition last year and now a three-time Gold Series winner this season, Skippin By has earned $223,600 in 2014 and $267,098 in her life.
This concluded the regular season for the three-year-old filly pacers of the Gold Series. Their final event on the calendar will be on October 11 when they compete in the Super Final at Mohawk Racetrack. For full results and charts of tonight’s races at Flamboro Downs, please visit –
