WOODSTOCK, ON — Dorchester residents Merv and Darlene Smith will be chauffeuring their grandchildren this Saturday, as the family heads to Woodstock Raceway to watch the three-year-old pacing filly whose name grew out of an earlier car trip.
“Slomotion ended up with a name from the back seat of the car, from our grandson,” explains Merv Smith. “He was coming up with all different names like Fast Motion — I told them it had to have motion’ in it — and when he came up with Slomotion I said, Perfect, that’ll be a good horse.'”
The Smith’s had to wait until this spring to find out whether Merv’s prophecy would prove accurate, but with eight starts under her belt to date, Slomotion seems to have risen to the challenge. The homebred daughter of Camotion and Icicle Angel has four wins, one second and two thirds to her credit since her May 8 racing debut, including a win in the June 22 Grassroots event at Clinton Raceway.
“She’s done all right, we’re quite happy with her,” says Smith. “She’s got a good brush for coming home and she can leave if you want her to go.”
Slomotion gave the Woodstock oval a test run in a July 22 overnight event and turned a pocket trip into a solid 1:58.1 victory. Driver Brad Forward will steer the filly from Post 6 in the second $20,000 Grassroots division at Woodstock on Saturday, so fans may have an opportunity to see the filly use her early speed to get positioned in a field that includes point leader Keystone Mystique from Post 5.
Another top Grassroots finish would secure Slomotion’s spot in the Grassroots post season and give trainer Scott Barr of Thamesford some flexibility in charting the remainder of her summer schedule.
“We’ll see what Scott thinks when she gets a few more races into her,” notes Smith. “She’s not hard raced, so she should be all right if she keeps progressing on.
“My saying for these horses is that they’re a lot longer old than they are young. I don’t know why we push them so hard as two-year-olds,” adds Smith philosophically.
The owner-breeder was content to wait on Slomotion and he is in no rush to see her younger sister arrive at a racetrack, although he does admit to a bit of anticipation over the weanling’s potential.
“She is a beautiful looking filly,” says Smith of the as yet unnamed daughter of Camotion and Icicle Angel. “She is a good looking, big filly. Anyone that’s seen her likes her, but we’ll stick to our plan with her too.”
In the meantime the Smith family is looking forward to their outing to Woodstock Raceway for Saturday’s matinee. Slomotion and her peers square off in the third race, with the three-year-old pacing fillies kicking things off in the first race at 1 pm. The other Grassroots divisions are slated as Races 4 through 6 and 8 through 10.
