CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Fans of Somebody To Love were practising their happy dance at Mohawk Racetrack on Saturday evening when the two-year-old trotting filly reeled off a major upset in the $130,000 Gold Final.

Starting from Post 4, driver Luc Ouellette floated Somebody To Love off the starting gate and settled her in fifth on the rail as Windsun Magical led the field of ten to a :28.2 opening quarter. Heading by the :57.4 half, the first surprise of the race occurred when Windsun Magical went off stride and dropped well back of the field.

Sitting on Windsun Magical’s shoulder when she went offstride, Beyond Limits inherited the lead and trotted on to a 1:27.3 three-quarters, while favourite Feels Like Magic shocked her fans by becoming the second highly regarded filly to go offstride. As betting stubs floated to the ground like snowflakes, Campbellville resident Ouellette eased Somebody To Love into the flow on the outside and pointed her towards the front.

At the top of the stretch Beyond Limits was still on top by one and three-quarter lengths, but Somebody To Love and Its My Time were closing the gap. When the dust settled on their thrilling stretch duel, Somebody To Love was awarded the 1:57.1 victory by one-quarter length. Its My Time took second-place honours, and In Fine Form, who drew in off the also eligible list when Magical Memories was scratched, closed hard to edge out Beyond Limits for third.

The win marked Somebody To Love’s first visit to the winner’s circle since July 17, when she captured an elimination in the Gold Series season opener at Georgian Downs. Since then the daughter of Angus Hall and Pick Me Up has posted a second in her Aug. 12 Robert Stewart Stake division, and a fourth from Post 10 in last week’s Gold Elimination.

Mentally Stable Inc. of Delray Beach, FL own Somebody To Love, and Cambridge resident Darren McCall trains the first foal of $529,694 winner Pick Me Up, who is a half-sister to top three-year-old trotting colt Gold Series competitor Flirtin Man ($315,687).

The win should cement Somebody To Love’s spot in the Nov. 10 Super Final at Woodbine Racetrack, which will feature the top 10 point earners from the five regular season Gold Series events. With two wins and one fourth to her credit, Somebody To Love has accumulated 108 points and currently sits fifth in the standings.

The two-year-old trotting fillies will make their last regular season stop at Western Fair Raceway on Oct. 5 and 12.

Ontario Sires Stakes excitement continues unabated at Mohawk Racetrack, with the two-year-old trotting colts lined up for a Gold Final on Sunday, Sept. 30, and the three-year-old trotting fillies squaring off in their second last final on Monday, Oct. 1.
