SUDBURY, ON — Two-year-old trotter P C La Mousse displayed the speed and good sense trainer Peter Clements was hoping for on Sunday afternoon when he trotted around the Sudbury Downs half-mile to the quickest win of four $24,000 Grassroots divisions.
In rein to Ross Battin, P C La Mousse trotted strongly away from the starting gate and wrestled control of the lead from Talbot Zack Attak just after the :30.3 opening quarter. Once he had taken command of the pace, the Mr Lavec son sailed along to a 1:02.2 half and a 1:33 three-quarters, and then pulled away from the field to a two length victory in 2:04.4.
Talbot Zack Attak earned the second-place finisher’s share of the Grassroots purse, while Reelie finished third.
Dobbinton, ON resident Clements bred, owns and trains P C La Mousse, who is the third foal from his former Ontario Sires Stakes winning mare Balladeer. Sunday’s victory was the gelding’s first and follows a strong third-place effort in the Grassroots season opener at Hiawatha Horse Park on July 15. Those two efforts are enough to situate P C La Mousse at the top of the two-year-old trotting colt Grassroots standings with a total of 62 points.
Sheikh Mo currently sits second in the point standings after his 2:06.4 victory in the last Grassroots division on Sunday. The Duke Of York son carved fractions of :31, 1:04.1 and 1:36 and was able to stave off a challenge from Easy Els in the stretch to secure the half length victory. Full Force rounded out the triactor.
Hall of Fame horseman Bob McIntosh of La Salle, ON trains Sheikh Mo for owner-breeder Dr. Moira Gunn of Caledon East, ON. Through three starts the colt now has one win and one fourth in Grassroots action, and one win in an overnight event for earnings of $15,920. Doug McNair, who currently sits atop the Ontario Sires Stakes driver’s standings, engineered Sunday’s victory.
In the first Grassroots division Wayne Henry trainee Tymal Recap made up for the error he made in the slop at Hiawatha on July 15 with an impressive two and three-quarter length victory in 2:05.1.
With Trevor Henry in the race bike for the Henry Stable of Arthur, ON and Dan McCann of Parkhill, ON, the Ken Warkentin son was sitting well behind pacesetter Windsun Tudor — who is owned by Sudbury resident Wayne MacLean — when that colt went off stride heading for the three-quarters. Tymal Recap inherited the lead, but earned the victory with a sharp finishing kick. The Odessa Man also closed hard to finish second, while Tymal Recap’s stablemate Touch Him Up was more than 19 lengths to the rear in third.
The other Grassroots division also featured a redemptive performance by Chuckalo Caden. The homebred son of Mr Lavec and Chuckalo Beckster delivered a workmanlike effort up the outside to reel in the leaders and land the one length victory in 2:06.4. Mr Joe Sixpack, Tamarind and Frenchmen were all hot on Chuckalo Caden’s heels in second, third and fourth place respectively.
Clare Chuck Thompson of Sunderland, ON bred, owns and trains Chuckalo Caden, who could only manage a seventh in the Grassroots season opener after making a break at the start. The youngster was flawless on Sunday, and will be looking to add more Grassroots points to his tally in the third event of the freshman trotting colt season, which will be contested over his hometown oval Kawartha Downs on August 17.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement returns to Sudbury Downs on Wednesday, Aug. 11 with the fourth Grassroots event of the season for the three-year-old trotting fillies.
