DUNDAS, ON — Owner Richard Buchanan enjoyed the rare pleasure of collecting two Grassroots trophies on Wednesday evening when two-year-old pacing fillies Torrid Pace and Got The Munchies toured Flamboro Downs in winning style.
The St. George Brant resident’s successful evening began in the second race when Torrid Pace stepped out from behind pacesetter Josie Wales in the stretch and sprinted home to a half length victory in 1:58.1. Stylish Fit also closed well to edge out Josie Wales for the runner-up share of the $18,052 Grassroots purse.
Carl Jamieson trains Torrid Pace and Got The Munchies for Buchanan, and Jody Jamieson engineered both victories. Torrid Pace prepped for her Grassroots debut with an Aug. 10 qualifier at Mohawk Racetrack and a third-place finish in an Aug. 17 overnight event at the Campbellville oval. In spite of her late arrival on the Grassroots scene, Wednesday’s win positions the No Pan Intended daughter among the top 16 point earners in the race toward a coveted Semifinal berth.
Stablemate Got The Munchies is also in a position to extend her season after Wednesday’s victory, which saw her recover from an early break and go on to a six and a half length victory in 1:58. Marias Vinagrette finished second and Intended To Fly rounded out the top three.
A full sister to former Jamieson standouts Cupcakesnwhipcream ($447,157) and Caviarandsoftmusic ($227,599), Got The Munchies qualified in June, but came up sick before her first start. The daughter of Camluck and Landfair Caveat qualified for a second time at Mohawk Racetrack on July 20, posting a 1:59.1 victory, and then finished third in the Aug. 5 Grassroots event at Clinton Raceway. Off that performance Jamieson and Buchanan opted to try her against the top tier fillies in the Aug. 12 Robert Stewart Stakes at Mohawk, and Got The Munchies delivered a sixth-place effort in her 1:56.1 division.
Driver Mario Baillargeon also made two appearances in Grassroots win photos on Wednesday. The Milton resident piloted Stonebridge Nugget to a 1:58.3 victory over Lovesick Blues and Daisy Baraness in the first race, and Twin B Shasta to a 1:58.3 victory over Chesapeake Summer and Souvenir De Toi in the last provincial division.
Trainer Robert McIntosh of LaSalle, breeder Angie Stiller of Arva and Dan Belliveau of Halifax, NS share ownership on Stonebridge Nugget, who was making her Grassroots debut at Flamboro on Wednesday. The win was the Camluck daughter’s first in three starts.
Waterdown resident Scott McEneny trains Twin B Shasta for Plam Stables and Shasta Stable of Toronto and Stephen Moza of Kelowna, BC. The Million Dollar Cam lass was a third-place finisher in her Robert Stewart division and bumped her lifetime record to two wins, one third and one fifth in her Grassroots debut.
The award for the quickest Grassroots mile went to Tennessee Starlit, who circled the half-mile oval in 1:57 to best Astreas Notice and St Lads Seraph in the sixth race. The win was the Mach Three daughter’s fourth straight and her second in Grassroots competition. Paul Taylor trains the talented youngster for Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Wallenstein.
Finally, division leader Onyx Seelster delivered her third straight Grassroots victory in the seventh race for trainer Gary Wallace and owner Liam Wallace of Troy. The Astreos daughter cruised along on the front end to stop the teletimer at 1:57.4, crossing under the wire two and a half lengths ahead of Casimir Hugs and six up on Its About Motion.
The two-year-old pacing fillies make their fourth Grassroots start on Sept. 3 at Dresden Raceway, and Ontario Sires Stakes action does not return to Flamboro Downs until Wednesday, Sept. 26 when the three-year-old pacing fillies will compete in their second Trillium Series contest.
