CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — St Lads Popcorn cruised to her seventh victory on Monday evening at Mohawk Racetrack, clocking a 1:52.2 personal best in the second of two $40,000 Gold Eliminations.
The two-year-old pacing filly and driver Jason Brewer floated away from Post 2 and were sitting fifth when Stonebridge Breeze reached the :27.1 opening quarter. The fan favourites started up the outside heading for the :55.4 half and had reached the front before the 1:24.1 three-quarters. Turning for home one length on top, St Lads Popcorn held off Northern Duchess to record the half length victory. Shellace rounded out the top three.
Cambridge resident Jack Darling owns and trains St Lads Popcorn, who has dominated the freshman filly Gold Series division this summer. In seven Gold Series starts the Twin B Champ daughter has five wins and one second for a total of 283 points and a stranglehold on top spot in the division standings.
In the second Gold Elimination Cheap Motel rocked home in :26.4 to earn her first Ontario Sires Stakes honour. Randy Waples piloted the Grinfromeartoear daughter to the win for trainer Rod Boyd and owners Bulletproof Enterprises Boca Raton, FL. Icey Breeze finished second and Shacked Up recovered quickly from a late break to claim the third-place spoils.
In six starts Cheap Motel now has a record of two wins and one second, and sits in a four-way tie for sixth in the division standings.
Also on the menu at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday were a pair of Trillium Series divisions for the three-year-old pacing fillies. Windsong Eva delivered an impressive front end effort to claim her second straight victory for trainer Bill Cass of Milton and his partner John Craig of North York.
Luc Ouellette, who piloted the Rambaran filly to her Gold Consolation win last weekend, was back in the bike for Monday’s 1:53.2 triumph over A Fiesty Affair and Go Get Her.
The other Trillium Series split went to the Art Major daughter of former Ontario Sires Stakes star Oven Mitt. Artimittateslife got a classic pocket steer from Milton resident Steve Condren and then stepped out in the lane to claim the half length victory in a personal best 1:51.3. Fan favourite Unique Legacy settled for second and Call Me Yours was a length back in third.
Trainer Bob Young of Guelph, Brian Barton of Carlisle and Paul Gazzola of Guelph bred and own the talented filly, who has accumulated nine wins, two seconds and two thirds in 14 starts, racing primarily south of the border.
The top five finishers from the two-year-old pacing filly eliminations will return to Mohawk Racetrack on Monday, Oct. 6 to compete for their second last $120,000 Gold Final title and help the Campbellville oval wrap up its 2008 racing season. Post time for Monday’s program is 7:20 pm.
