DUNDAS, ON — Mark Steacy will harness three fillies in next Wednesday’s regular season finale at Flamboro Downs, and while only Travelin Supergirl will advance through to the Semifinal, all three have exhibited enough potential that the trainer is already looking forward to next year.
Travelin Supergirl boasts a record of two wins and one third in three Grassroots starts, and currently sits tied for third in the division standings with 112 points. This spring Steacy felt the daughter of Kadabra and Travelin Superlite was headed for the Gold Series, but a bout of sickness delayed her racing debut and the Lansdowne resident opted to scale back his expectations rather than over face the filly.
“I probably could have put her in the Gold races. I don’t think she would have won a Gold, those fillies are pretty strong, but I think she could have been a cheque getter,” reflects Steacy, who trains the filly for owner-breeder Peter Heffering of Port Perry. “Instead we’ve brought her along slowly this year, and hopefully she’ll fit there next season.”
Travelin Supergirl makes her fourth Grassroots start from Post 2 in the fifth race on Wednesday, with Steacy handling driving duties on the winner of $29,826.
The horseman will pilot Lady Keely from Post 7 in the eighth race and says this season has been primarily a learning experience for the daughter of Angus Hall and Armbro Vail. Lady Keely has six starts under her belt, three of them in the Grassroots program, and boasts a record of one second and three thirds.
“She knows what to do now, and if she fills out over the winter she could be a nice little filly next year. We might have some fun with her too,” says Steacy, who shares ownership on Lady Keely with his father Clarke Steacy of Lansdowne, Stan Klemencic of Trenton, David Reid of Glenburnie and Richard Karper of Saint-Laurent, QC.
“If she could just maybe put on 150 or 200 pounds and get a little stronger — she seems to have a little step, but she’s not really strong at the end of the mile right now,” he adds.
The final member of Steacy’s entry is Misty Morgan, who will make her fifth Grassroots start from Post 5 in the tenth race. Bred and owned by Glengate Farms of Campbellville, the Angus Hall miss has been the biggest surprise of the trio.
“She started slow in the spring and I wasn’t sure if she was going to make it to the races,” recalls Steacy. “But she was determined. She got racing and got better.
“She’s not a big strong filly yet, she’s got a lot of growing up to do,” he adds. “I think she’ll be a nice little player next year as well.”
Steacy’s trio join 43 other freshman trotting fillies at Flamboro Downs on Wednesday, Oct. 10, squaring off for a total of $102,386 in Races 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10. Post time at the Dundas half-mile is 6 pm.
