Strobe Lite turned the tables on Touchedbyanangel with a 1:52.2 career-best mile in the lone $140,000 Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Gold Series Leg 2 event for male sophomore trotters on Sunday night (June 21) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Touchedbyanangel (Doug McNair), the winner of the $140,000 Leg 1 Gold event on May 24 at Mohawk, led much of Sunday’s race with Strobe Lite (James MacDonald) sitting comfortably in the pocket. In the stretch, Strobe Lite trotted home in :26.3 to record a 1 ½ length victory over Touchedbyanangel to improve his career bankroll to $586,328 and his record to 5-6-4 in 17 starts.
Dream For Peace (Mark MacDonald) finished third in the field of seven, followed by Mike Me Up (Tyler Borth) and Anibal Duharas (Louis-Philippe Roy).
The fractions were: :28.1, 57, and 1:25.3.
Strobe Lite paid $3.50 as the favorite.
The gelded son of Alarm Detector out of Shine Bright is owned, in part, by his trainer, Ben Baillargeon who shares Strobe Lite’s ownership with the trotter’s breeder, Glengate Farms of Erin, ON, along with Claude Hamel of Orford, QC and Nunzio Vena of Bolton, ON.
Sold for $16,000 at the 2024 London Classic Yearling Sale, Strobe Lite was the winner of the $300,000 OSS Super Final at 2 and was voted the O’Brien Award winner as Canada’s 2-year-old Trotting Colt of the Year in 2025 after collecting earnings of $379,921 and posting a record of 3-3-3 in 11 freshman starts.
This year, Strobe Lite has hit the board in all six starts. He sports a 2-3-1 record, including a victory in the $130,475 SBOA Final on May 16.
