CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Style captured her second straight Gold Final at Mohawk Racetrack on Friday evening with an impressive come from behind effort that saw the two-year-old pacing filly breeze under the wire three lengths on top in 1:53.1.

With regular reinsman Tony Kerwood in the race bike, Style landed in seventh as Don’t You Smile and Stonebridge Prima shot off the wings to battle for early control of the pace. By the :56 half Let’s Talk Turkey had moved to the front and the elimination winner took the fillies through a 1:24 three-quarters while Style continued to sit on the outside in seventh.

Turning for home Style and Kerwood had moved to within three lengths of the leader, and an impressive finishing kick propelled the fan favourites down the stretch to their seventh victory. Longshot Even Now also closed well to earn the runner-up share of the $130,000 Ontario Sires Stakes purse, while pocket sitter Don’t You Smile landed in third.

John Kopas trains Style for breeders Glengate Farms of Campbellville and their partner George Hempt of Camp Hill, PA, and prior to the start of Friday’s battle the Campbellville resident commented on the integral role Tony Kerwood has played in Style’s success.

“In June when we were schooling horses Tony went with her. He seemed to fit her well, and you can’t argue with the job he’s done,” said the veteran horseman. “He’s done a heck of a job for us.”

Kerwood’s finesse earned the Rustler Hanover daughter her seventh victory in 11 starts this season. She also boasts two seconds and one third for earnings of $528,538 and sits second in the Gold Series point standings with one event remaining in the regular season.

Style’s victory earned her fans $4.50 on each win wager, $2.60 for a place ticket and $2.30 on a show voucher. Even Now, the longest shot in the field of 10, returned $40.00 to place and $11.10 to show, while fourth choice Don’t You Smile’s third-place effort paid $3.90. The exactor was worth $142.60, the triactor paid $533.00 and those who added fourth-place finisher To Helen Back, owned by Mike Shunock of Toronto, to their ticket for a superfecta wager earned $1,287.95.

The gifted two-year-old pacing fillies make their last regular season start at Windsor Raceway on Oct. 29, where they will battle for the 10 spots in the season ending $300,000 Super Final.

Mohawk Racetrack wraps up its 2005 Ontario Sires Stakes season on Monday with a Gold Final for the two-year-old trotting colts.
