CLINTON, ON — Clinton resident Paul Taylor had a successful afternoon at the office on Sunday, winning one two-year-old pacing filly Grassroots division at Clinton Raceway and finishing second in another.
Taylor harnessed Tennessee Starlit in the sixth of seven $15,168 Grassroots divisions on the Sunday matinee and the Mach Three daughter delivered a gritty performance to claim a one length victory in 2:01.
In rein to Trevor Henry, Tennessee Starlet sat in the middle of the pack through the early going, then clawed her way up the outside to reel in pacesetter Slaley and earn her second straight victory for owners Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Wallenstein.
Stonebridge Beauty and fan favourite Kingfishers Beauty rounded out the top three in the ninth race.
One race before Tennessee Starlit appeared in the Clinton winner’s circle, Henry guided Taylor trainee Blinker Hanover to a second-place finish behind Josie Wales.
In spite of starting from the outside Post 7, Josie Wales controlled the race from start to finish, cruising home a two and three-quarter length winner in 2:01.1. Henry and Blinker Hanover were second, edging out the fast closing Ridge Road Emma.
Trainer-driver Joe Hudon of Acton and Jeffrey Stober of Toronto bred and own Josie Wales, who was making her lifetime debut in Sunday’s Grassroots contest. The daughter of Apaches Fame and former Hudon trainee Ante Hanover prepped for the provincial event with a 1:58.3 qualifier at Mohawk Racetrack on July 27.
Stylish Fit and Onyx Killean delivered the quickest miles of the seven Grassroots divisions.
In Race 4 Onyx Killean took command of the race before the halfway marker and loafed home to a two and three-quarter length win in 1:59.2. Panna Nicole dogged the leader’s footsteps to finish second, while Dangerous Mind was seven lengths back in third.
The win was Onyx Killean’s second straight Grassroots triumph. Gary Wallace trains and drives the talented daughter of Astreos and Odessa Blue Chip for Liam Wallace of Troy.
In contrast, loafing was not a factor in Stylish Fit’s 1:59.2 victory. The Fit For Life daughter took a commanding four length lead when she cleared to the front down the backstretch, but she had to fight tooth and nail to the wire to hold off a hard charging Nika by a short nose. Like Dangerous Mind, Got The Munchies was seven lengths behind the leaders in third.
Mike Sumner piloted Stylish Fit to her second straight victory for trainer Scott McNiven and owners Kimberley McNiven of Putnam, Bradley McNiven of Embro and breeders Twin B Stables Ltd. of Embro. The win improved on the fourth-place finish Stylish Fit recorded in the Grassroots season opener at Hanover Raceway on July 21.
The other Grassroots winners were Its About Motion in 2:01.1, Chesapeake Summer in 2:01 and Keystone Samurai in 2:01.1.
The two-year-old pacing fillies return to Grassroots action on Aug. 22 at Flamboro Downs. Ontario Sires Stakes excitement returns to Clinton Raceway on Sunday, Sept. 2 when the remarkably talented two-year-old trotting fillies bring their speed show to the popular half-mile oval.
