DRESDEN, ON — Two freshman trotting colts with their roots firmly planted in Dresden soil will make their Ontario Sires Stakes debut at home on Sunday afternoon, competing in a pair of $33,578 Grassroots divisions.

“Everything about him is kind of hometown,” says Fred Jewell about Ainthatrtfreddy. “He’s driven by Christopher Johnston from Dresden, he’s trained in Dresden, his mother trained in Dresden, and his brothers and sisters trained in Dresden.”

Ainthatrtfreddy will start from Post 4 in Dresden Raceway’s second race on Sunday, and two races later his nephew’, The Super Aussie, will start from Post 8. The Super Aussie is the second foal from Ainthatrtfreddy’s elder sister Ohio Charmer, and is owned by breeder Wayne Parker of Chatham and trained and driven by Dresden resident John Sullivan.

“He’s just a slick colt too,” says Jewell of The Super Aussie. “The last time he qualified I think he had the seven-hole, and he crossed over to the front before the turn.”

Jewell is hoping both colts benefit from the familiar surroundings on Sunday, while their competition ships in from as far away as Ohio.

“It’s a blessing that they are right here the first time, then it doesn’t take so much out of them heading down the road,” says the Dresden resident, who shares training duties on Ainthatrtfreddy with his wife, and the colt’s owner and breeder, Kathryn Jewell.

Ainthatrtfreddy heads into his first lifetime start off a steady third-place finish in a July 15 qualifier that saw him trot around the Dresden half-mile in 2:08. The qualifier was a satisfying moment for the Jewell’s, who have suffered more than a teaspoonful of frustration with the Southwind Lustre son over the last two years.

“He tested us pretty good,” admits Jewell. “He always had talent, he always had go, but he had some shoeing problems and some rigging problems early, and he acts like he’s got one extra eye ball sometimes.”

Once the couple ironed out some of the wrinkles, and the colt’s training regimen started to get a little more rigorous, Ainthatrtfreddy started to settle in and behave like a racehorse, so they are hoping for a solid performance from the youngster on Sunday.

“Of late he’s settled right down, he’s getting down to business,” says Jewell. “We expect him to be a pretty nice colt, but he’s still got some maturing to do.”

The fractious youngster will take his first step down the road to maturity in the first of three $33,578 Grassroots divisions on Sunday. Post time for Dresden Raceway’s matinee program is 1 pm and the two-year-old trotting colts will try out their skills in Races 2, 4 and 7.
