SUDBURY, ON — Themachmanprophecy picked up his first lifetime victory with a 2:02.1 victory in two-year-old pacing colt Grassroots action at Sudbury Downs on Saturday evening.
The mile was the fastest of four $26,618 Grassroots divisions contested over the rain soaked half-mile, rated four seconds slower than normal, and saw the Mach Three son spin across the wire two lengths in front of fan favourite Wholly Louy and five lengths up on Fiesty Baran.
Tony Kerwood piloted Themachmanprophecy to the victory for trainer Arthur Balson of Orono and his partners David Snowden of Bowmanville and Timothy Smith of Ennismore. Through seven starts the novice pacer now boasts a record of one win, one second and two thirds.
Two sons of Mach Three battled to an exciting finish in the first Grassroots division, with Machthemoment and driver Brad Forward earning the one length victory over Mach It Paid and Allan Cullen.
Stoney Creek resident Brian MacInnis trains Machthemoment for his partners Pace Management Solutions Inc., of Mississauga. The partners paid just $6,500 for the striking chestnut colt at last fall’s Forest City Yearling Sale and have already recouped $19,122 in just four starts. The win propelled Machthemoment into a three-way tie for seventh spot in the Grassroots division standings, 50 points behind leader Mach It Paid.
Live For Today rounded out the top three in the first Grassroots division, while favourite Blatantly Good was three lengths back in fifth.
Wantasmile and The Scalawag edged into contention for one of 16 spots in the Grassroots Semifinals with victories in the other two divisions.
First time Grassroots starter Wantasmile and driver Allan Cullen took full advantage of Post 1 and controlled the fractions through the 2:05 mile, cruising under the wire a length ahead of Premier Luck and Tune Me Out.
William Elliott trains Wantasmile for Antonio Chiaravalle of Hamilton, who acquired the son of Grinfromeartoear and Intense Desire for $80,000 from the Forest City sale last fall. In four starts the half-brother to $536,590 winner Dream Wave has one win and one second to his credit for earnings of $16,434.
The Scalawag stepped off his second win of the season in the last Grassroots division, pacing under the wire three lengths ahead of With A Smile On and Chasin Jiffy in 2:04. Richard Turcotte piloted the Bo Knows Jate son to his first Grassroots win for trainer Joseph Intine and owners Touch Stone Farms of Cambridge and Shane Langlade of Waterloo.
The province’s talented two-year-old pacing colts wrapped up Sudbury Downs’ 2006 Ontario Sires Stakes season. They will make their second last Grassroots start on Thursday, Aug. 31, getting an advance tour of the Flamboro Downs oval, the site of this season’s Grassroots Championships.
