FRASERVILLE, ON — She missed half of the Ontario Sires Stakes season, but three-year-old pacing filly To Helen Back roared back on to the provincial playing field with a track record performance in the second of two Trillium Series divisions at Kawartha Downs on Thursday.
In her second start back from a two and a half month lay off, To Helen Back logged an impressive seven length victory in a track record 1:52.2, shaving one-fifth of a second off the former speed record shared by Fernbank Fiona (2001) and In Trepid Water (2006).
Leaving from Post 6 driver Anthony MacDonald eased To Helen Back off the gate as Prairie Tracker burst out to a :27.3 opening quarter. While Prairie Tracker maintained the hot pace through the :55.4 half MacDonald moved To Helen Back to the outside and started advancing toward the leaders.
As Prairie Tracker and Bold Bidder battled toward the 1:24.2 three-quarters, MacDonald made a bold move with To Helen Back, sending the Astreos daughter three-wide after the lead. Sprinting away from the field, To Helen Back hit the top of the stretch six and a half lengths on top and added another half length to her lead before she hit the wire in the track record 1:52.2.
So Bashful earned the runner-up share of the $33,478 purse and Windsun Countess, owned by MMR Stables Inc., Janet Fife and Rodger Webb of Norwood, rounded out the top three.
The win marked To Helen Back’s first trip to the winner’s circle since a June 12 Gold Elimination at Woodbine Racetrack and her second of the season. The winner of $291,852 is trained by Jason Libby for Mike Shunock of Toronto.
The first Trillium division saw Even Now claim her third victory of the season with a 1:53.3 score. The Rustler Hanover daughter and driver Doug Brown sat in the pocket behind Famous Hunch through fractions of :27.4, :56.2 and 1:24.2 before sprinting home to the one length victory. Fancy A Dream also closed well to be second, while Famous Hunch settled for third.
John Pentland trains Even Now for his fellow breeders CJS Stables Inc. of London and his wife Natalie Pentland of Dorchester. The win boosted the filly’s sophomore record to three wins, three seconds and three thirds in 16 starts for earnings of $170,084.
Thursday’s event wrapped up the provincial season for the three-year-old pacing fillies. Kawartha Downs will play host to one last Trillium Series event on Tuesday, Nov. 7 for the two-year-old trotting fillies.
