GLOUCESTER, ON — When the three-year-old trotting colts return to Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday for their $130,000 Gold Final, everyone in the Majestic Son camp will be breathing a little easier.

When the colt captured his elimination last weekend he broke a streak of bad luck at the Ottawa oval that had been plaguing trainer Mark Steacy for longer than he cared to remember.

“He brought it up a lot so it obviously did bother him,” says Dr. Malcolm Man Son Hing, who shares ownership on Majestic Son with A K Malik Stable of Ottawa, David McDonald of Cornwall and David Reid of Glenburnie. “I told him, If we can’t break your jinx with Majestic Son, then it must truly be a jinx.'”

Not only did Majestic Son break the jinx, he did so in impressive fashion, cruising to a five and a half length win in a track record 1:56. By comparison the other elimination was timed more than a full second slower in 1:57.2.

“He was well in hand, as I understand, from talking to Trevor (Ritchie),” notes Man Son Hing. “Obviously we don’t take anything for granted, but we think that he would have a shot at it (Sunday).”

The win was the Angus Hall son’s third this season through five starts. Prior to arriving at Rideau Carleton last week he had already scored a 1:53.2 triumph in the $280,600 Goodtimes Final at Woodbine Racetrack on June 17 and posted a 1:57.2 victory over a sloppy track at Woodbine on June 3.

“He came back as a three-year-old better than we could have ever dreamed of,” says Man Son Hing. “It’s the thrill of a lifetime. We recognize that we are lucky to have this one, and may never, ever get another like him, so we are going to enjoy the ride.

“Credit goes to Mark and the stable for managing him, they have done a fantastic job,” adds the Nepean resident. “And credit Trevor Ritchie with the great job he’s done as well.”

Ritchie will be back in the race bike for Sunday’s Gold Final, and for the second straight week the pair will start from Post 1. The other elimination winner Swan Image will start from Post 3, reigning Gold Final champion Mr Lemon gets Post 6 and last year’s O’Brien award winner in the two-year-old trotting colt division, Was It A Dream, starts from Post 8.

The talented young trotters square off in the seventh race on Rideau Carleton Raceway’s Sunday evening program, which gets under way at 6:30 pm.
