FRASERVILLE, ON — One week after setting a track record at Georgian Downs, the two-year-old trotting fillies stormed into Fraserville and laid a beating on the Kawartha Downs track record and an Ontario Sires Stakes record that had not been bettered for nine years.
Three eliminations went behind the starting gate at Kawartha on Tuesday night, and all three bettered the five-eighths mile oval’s former record of 1:58.1, set by OSS competitor JM Aggie on Aug. 1, 2006. When all was said and done, reigning Gold Final champion Dornello and rival Windsun Magical had their names engraved into the Kawartha Downs history books alongside the 1:57.3 clocking, which also lowered the Ontario Sires Stakes record set by Infinites Uprising at Windsor Raceway in 1998.
Windsun Magical set the tempo of the evening and brought Kawartha Downs fans to their feet in the first elimination, powering down the stretch to the 1:57.3 victory over Its My Time and In Fine Form. Hornby Gem, In Fine Form and Its My Time all spent some time on the front during the mile, which saw fractions of :30, :59.3 and 1:27.3 hung up on the infield teletimer.
Jason Gilchrist trains and drives Windsun Magical for Dr. Frederick Albert of Prescott. The win was the Kadabra daughter’s second of her four start season and her first in provincial action. She was a runner-up to Torch in her July 17 Gold Elimination at Georgian Downs and finished second to Dornello in the July 24 Final.
The least expensive of the nine fillies who will return to Kawartha for the Aug. 7 Gold Final, Windsun Magical was a $16,000 bargain at last fall’s Forest City Yearling Sale.
One race later Dornello matched Windsun Magical’s effort with a commanding three and three-quarter length victory over Tymal Mystique and Beauty Queen. Dornello and driver Trevor Ritchie took command of the race before the half and never faced a serious challenge on their way to the 1:57.3 triumph.
Trained by Dave Tingley for Goin My Way Stable of Holland, PA, Dornello has been flawless since she stepped onto the track for a July 6 qualifier at Mohawk Racetrack. The daughter of Angus Hall and $743,350 winner Me Maggie was a 1:59.2 in her July 17 Gold Elimination and posted the 1:58.2 track record in the Final.
A $75,000 US purchase at the 2006 Lexington Select Yearling Sale, Dornello has earned $97,380 in her first three starts.
In the last elimination Torch was just one-fifth of a second shy of joining her peers in the Kawartha Downs and Ontario Sires Stakes record books, cruising home to a three and one-quarter length win in 1:57.4.
The impressive daughter of Kadabra and Red Hot And Blue delivered her third straight effort up the outside to record the win, taking full advantage of a late miscue by pacesetter Somebody To Love, who clocked fractions of :28.4, :59 and 1:28.1 before packing it in around the last turn. Putter Perfect followed Torch up the outside to be second and Katies Kadabra rounded out the top three.
Jody Jamieson piloted Torch, a $50,000 purchase from the Canadian Open Yearling Sale, to her third win in four starts for his father, trainer Carl Jamieson of Princeton, and Ken Henwood of Mississauga. The filly’s only loss in her young career was a third-place finish behind Dornello and Windsun Magical in the season opening Gold Final.
Four of the nine fillies returning to Fraserville next Tuesday, Aug. 7 for the $130,000 Gold Final are from the first crop of Kadabra, two are daughters of Angus Hall, two are sired by Striking Sahbra and Putter Perfect is by Shipps Speed.
