CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Mohawk Racetrack extends a star studded weekend of stakes action with a trio of Gold Series Eliminations for the two-year-old trotting fillies on Monday.

Among the fillies hoping to shine on the provincial stage before their regular season comes to a close next weekend is Whitesand Electra, who heads into the third $34,357 elimination off a 2:00.1 victory at Georgian Downs on Sept. 16.

“She trained real good all winter, then she got sick just before I baby raced her and she started making breaks. She’d never made a break before in her life,” says trainer Jerry Duford of Campbellville. “She just wasn’t the same filly, but it seems like she’s coming around now.”

Monday’s outing will be Whitesand Electra’s second in Gold Series action and her third on the provincial stage. After a pair of qualifiers in June, the daughter of Angus Hall and Hey U Guys made her debut in the Grassroots season opener at Georgian Downs, but a break at the halfway marker sent her back to the qualifying ranks. Two weeks later she made the trip to Hanover Raceway for the second Grassroots event and was on top by two at the half when she made another error.

Rather than head for Kawartha Downs and Quinte Exhibition Raceway for the third and fourth Grassroots events, Duford decided to test Whitesand Electra on a larger oval and the filly responded with a sixth and a fifth in Mohawk’s In Free Trotting Series on July 30 and Aug. 6. Those two flawless performances earned Whitesand Electra a start against the top fillies in the Aug. 13 Robert Stewart Memorial, where she finished sixth, and the Aug. 20 Gold Elimination, where was sixth once again.

Back at Mohawk for an overnight event on Aug. 28, Whitesand Electra delivered a runner-up performance in a 1:58.2 mile, trotting home in a smart :28.2 and convincing her trainer that she was rounding back into form.

“She seems real good again,” says Duford, who trains the filly for Joanne Wray of Campbellville. “She’s small, but she can trot pretty good.”

Whitesand Electra and driver Mario Baillargeon will make their bid for Gold Series glory from Post 1 in Monday’s sixth race, facing off against a field of eight that includes two fillies currently ranked among the top 10 in the division. Windsong Darling sits seventh and will try to add to her point tally from Post 2, while J M Aggie sits ninth and will start from Post 9.

“I haven’t had a chance to look at it,” says Duford of the sixth race field. “All I know is I got the rail.”

The top three finishers from each elimination, plus one fourth-place finisher selected by random draw, will return to Mohawk Racetrack on Monday, Oct. 2 for their last $130,000 Gold Final. The fillies will square off in Races 2, 4 and 6 on Monday, with the Campbellville oval’s first race going in behind the gate at 7:20 pm.
