WINDSOR, ON — Ontario’s trotting filly ranks have been the platform for some legendary rivalries and this season’s two-year-old trotting filly division is evolving into that kind of struggle between Tymal Timeout and Caught My Eye.
On Sunday at Windsor Raceway the two went head-to-head for just the second time this season and on this day Tymal Timeout eked out a neck victory to claim the Gold Final title.
Lining up from Posts 1 and 4, Tymal Timeout and Caught My Eye got away from the starting gate in second and fourth. As Brad Forward rolled J M Aggie through a :28.3 opening quarter and a :58.4 half, the rivals maintained their positions on the rail, but heading for the 1:28.3 three-quarters Bill O’Donnell sent Caught My Eye up the outside to challenge for the lead.
As the fillies turned for home J M Aggie was hanging on to her lead by a neck, with Caught My Eye hot on her heels and Tymal Timeout one and a half lengths back in third. The trio battled down the stretch and when the dust cleared and racing officials had examined the photograph, Tymal Timeout was declared the winner by a neck, with Caught My Eye second and J M Aggie three-quarters of a length back in third.
The 1:58.3 mile lowered Tymal Timeout’s personal best by one and two-fifths seconds and boosted her record to four wins and one second in five starts. Her only loss came in the July 8 Gold Final at Flamboro Downs where Caught My Eye claimed a three-quarter length victory.
Wayne Henry trains and drives Tymal Timeout for his partners in the Henry Stable of Arthur, father Ross and brother Trevor Henry, and Daniel McCann of Parkhill. The daughter of Royal Strength and Lukes Elvira is a full sister to $172,707 winner Lookit, who raced out of the Henry stable in 2004 and 2005.
Windsor Raceway fans sent Tymal Timeout off as their third choice and the filly returned $10.40 to win, $4.40 to place and $3.90 to show. Favourite Caught My Eye, who is owned by John Ferguson of Windsor, trainer Frank O’Reilly or Orton and John Fielding of Toronto, returned $2.70 to place and $2.70 to show, while sixth choice J M Aggie returned $5.20 to show. The exactor was worth $31.60, the triactor paid $387.80 and the superfecta delivered a $647.30 dividend.
Tymal Timeout and Caught My Eye will resume their burgeoning rivalry next Sunday, July 30 when they travel to Rideau Carleton Raceway for their third Gold Series event.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement also continues at Windsor Raceway next Sunday, July 30 with Gold Eliminations for the remarkably gifted two-year-old pacing fillies who have been following track and world record holder Luck Of Michelle on a lightening fast tour of the province’s racetracks.
