FRASERVILLE, ON — Tyrone Megabucks put together an impressive come-from-behind effort at Kawartha Downs on Tuesday afternoon to earn her first Ontario Sires Stakes victory and secure a berth in the lucrative Grassroots post season.
With Tony Kerwood in the race bike for breeder Dave Boyle of Bowmanville and trainer Robert McIntosh of LaSalle, Tyrone Megabucks got away last in the field of eight and was forced to travel the long way up the outside. Twelve lengths off the pace at the quarter-mile marker, Tyrone Megabucks made steady progress toward the leaders and was just three lengths back in third when pacesetter Lookit turned for home.
The charge down the stretch featured four talented fillies, and only one length separated the group at the wire, but it was Tyrone Megabucks who prevailed by a nose over Lookit in a personal best 2:00.1. CR Campfiregirl captured the third place share of the $16,598 purse while Meadowviewprincess, owned by Meadowview Farms Inc. of Orono, settled for fourth.
Tuesday’s victory propelled Tyrone Megabucks from the thirty-second spot in the Grassroots standings into a tie for ninth, and guaranteed the San Pellegrino daughter a berth in the Oct. 7 Grassroots Semifinals at Georgian Downs.
