CLINTON, ON — Upsets were the rule rather than the exception at Clinton Raceway on Sunday afternoon, as the three-year-old trotting fillies battled in their second Grassroots event of the season.

Yorkys Girl was the only filly sent off as the fans’ top choice who managed to deliver a victory, reeling off a gate-to-wire triumph in 2:02.3 for trainer Wanda Iafrates and owner-breeder Aubrey Friedman of Burlington. Scott Coulter piloted the Duke Of York daughter to the two and three-quarter length win over Awesome Edna and Ms Firestorm.

Through three starts this season Yorkys Girl has a flawless record of three victories, and currently sits in a tie for top spot in the Grassroots standings with a total of 100 points.

The biggest upset of Sunday’s Grassroots performance came in the fifth race when favourite Directryassistance knocked herself out of contention with a pair of miscues, and longshot To The Rescue nosed out pacesetter H S Gingersnap for a 2:05.3 win. Maples Image was a head back in third.

John Devine piloted To The Rescue to her first lifetime victory for trainer Keith Klages of Guelph, who also bred and owns the Malabar Maple daughter.

The fastest mile of the Grassroots program came in the last division when Emerald Whisper and Bruce Richardson rocketed around the half-mile oval to a 2:01.1 victory, just one-fifth of a second off the three-year-old trotting filly track record.

The pair sat tucked in behind pacesetter Fabtowin through fractions of :28.3, 1:00 and 1:31 before circling around to the front and sprinting home to the three and three-quarter length victory over favourite Don Wan Misy. Berniecomestotown was another seven lengths back in third.

Susanne Kerwood trains Emerald Whisper for Emerald Ridge Farm in Rockwood and Devos Stables and Mary Devos of Langton. The effort extended the Earl daughter’s win streak to four and boosted her season earnings to $33,320.

The other Grassroots winner were Lady Mae C Fert in 2:03, Betty Rose in 2:04.1, Malahide in 2:03.3 and Hi Edith in 2:02.2.
