DUNDAS, ON — Flamboro Downs fans were treated to four exciting Gold Eliminations on Sunday afternoon, led off by the talented three-year-old trotting colts.

Randy Waples had fan favourite Text Me ready to roll as soon as the starting gate pulled away from the field for the first $40,000 Gold Elimination, and the Kadabra son had opened up a three length gap on the field by the time he posted the :28 opening quarter. Text Me and Waples maintained a sizeable margin on their peers through the :58.1 half and 1:27 three-quarters, then dug in down the stretch to secure the 1:56.2 victory.

Hidden Message tried hard to catch the leader through the last quarter, but was held three-quarters of a length at bay. Go Go Red Marty was two more lengths back in third, with Quantum Starship three more to the rear in fourth.

Milton, ON resident Waples engineered Text Me’s sixth sophomore victory for trainer Bob McIntosh of La Salle, ON and his partners Dave Boyle of Bowmanville, ON and C S X Stables of Liberty Center, OH. The homebred son of Kadabra and Dial Nine has won all but one of the stakes eliminations he has entered this season, but has captured only one final — the season opening Gold Final at Mohawk Racetrack on May 31 — a statistic he will attempt to alter next Sunday.

In the second trotting colt elimination Jody Jamieson sent Windsong Geant straight to the front, and that gelding also rang up all the fractions en route to a one length victory in 1:59.2.

Scotty Doesnt Know turned a pocket trip into a second-place cheque, while Windsun Galaxie and Arriba Amigo both recovered from breaks to claim the third and fourth-place shares.

The win was Windsong Geant’s first in Ontario Sires Stakes action this season and boosts his sophomore record to four wins, two seconds and one third in 11 starts. Shawn Robinson trains the young trotter — who is also by Kadabra and out of the former Ontario Sires Stakes star Early Secret — for The Brabant Stable of London and Fred Brayford of Alliston, ON.

Once the sophomore trotters had completed their tours of the Dundas oval, it was the freshman pacers’ turn, and they proceeded to crank up the excitement level with two impressive efforts.

Kicking off the heart stopping action were Dr Dew and Jean Rene Plante, who rocketed off the gate from Post 5 and ran off to a six length lead before the :29.3 quarter. Seven Grins made a valiant attempt to maintain contact with the leader through the :56.4 half and the 1:25.2 three-quarters, but Dr Dew stepped off down the stretch to a fourth and three-quarter length triumph in a personal best 1:54.1.

Some Mach Some Win delivered a tough effort up the outside to finish second, with Kyron and Mach Of Ballykeel sprinting home to be third and fourth.

William Windsor conditions Dr Dew for Uncirculated Stable of Brantford, ON, who purchased the son of Royal Mattjesty and Wave At Sam from Delaware, ON based breeder Joseph McLean following the first Gold Series event of the season. Dr Dew impressed Uncirculated principals Aaron and Isaac Waxman with a third-place effort in his July 8 Gold Elimination and a fourth from Post 9 in the July 15 Gold Final.

While Dr Dew impressed with his dominant performance, the excitement in the second pacing colt elimination was generated by the heated battle to the wire.

Randy Waples fired lightly rated Cam B Zipper away from Post 5 and had grabbed command of the lead before the field swung out of the first turn, but the gelding’s tenure on top was brief as Jack Moiseyev sent Lyons Elite after the leader’s position before the :27.2 opening quarter. Fan favourite Lyons Elite continued to lead the field through the :57.2 half and 1:26.1 three-quarters, with Cam B Zipper sitting happily in the pocket. Madrigal Mindale attempted to reel the leaders in around the final turn, but could not gain any traction on the top two, who hit the overdrive button in the stretch.

As the colts swung off the turn, Waples tipped Cam B Zipper into the inside passing lane and the gelding took aim on Lyons Elite. The duo paced as one under the wire, stopping the clock at 1:55.3, and officials required a magnifying glass to decipher the winner. Cam B Zipper earned the victory by a whisker, leaving Lyons Elite to settle for second.

Madrigal Mindale was five lengths back in third, while Machal Jackson recovered from a break at the start to finish fourth and advance to next week’s Gold Final.

Blackstock, ON resident William James owns and trains Cam B Zipper, who was an $11,000 purchase from last year’s Forest City Yearling Sale. Sunday’s outing was the gelding’s first pari-mutuel start, following a July 27 qualifying effort at Mohawk Racetrack that saw the son of Cammibest and Kellycrombie post a 1:57.1 victory.

Cam B Zipper will attempt to make it two in a row from Post 3 in next Sunday’s Gold Final. The 2-year-old pacing colt and 3-year-old trotting colt Gold Finals will be part of Flamboro Downs’s highly anticipated Confederation Cup program next Sunday afternoon.
