GLOUCESTER, ON — Astreos daughters scooped up the top four spots in Sunday night’s $72,442 Trillium Series event at Rideau Carleton Raceway, led by victor Warrawee Koine.

In rein to Greely resident Ted McDonald, Warrawee Koine sprinted away from Post 3 to a :27.4 opening quarter. The pair continued to cruise along on the front through a :56.2 half, but heading for the 1:25.3 three-quarters Simon Allard and Run To Vegas stepped to the outside and tried to overpower the pacesetters.

Warrawee Koine fought back, refusing to allow Run To Vegas any advantage and the fillies battled tooth and nail down the stretch to an outstanding finish that saw Warrawee Koine awarded the 1:55 victory by half a length. Star Of Show rounded out the top three, with her stablemate from the Mark Steacy barn, Pretty Thing, in fourth. Are four fillies are by sire Astreos, who is currently ranked second among all Ontario-based pacing stallions.

Sunday’s victory was the seventh this season for Warrawee Koine, who also has one second and one third to her credit through 15 starts. In provincial stakes action the filly has logged a sixth in the May 22 Gold Series season opener at Western Fair Raceway, a fourth in the June 19 Grassroots contest at Flamboro Downs, and a 1:54.3 victory over the Rideau Carleton oval in the Aug. 6 Grassroots skirmish.

Warrawee Koine enjoyed her greatest success early in the season, sweeping both legs and the final of the Silver Reign Series at Woodbine Racetrack in March, and capturing the final of the Ontario Spring Series at Mohawk Racetrack in May.

Guelph resident Gregg McNair trains the winner of $137,141 for breeder Dr. Michael Wilson of Warrawee Farms in Rockwood and his partner Lobro Stables of London. The filly is the second foal from My Gal Hall, who is a full sister to $1 million winner, and former Ontario sire, Cammibest.

Warrawee Koine and her Grassroots peers make their fifth start of the season at Hiawatha Horse Park on Sept. 10, while the Gold Series fillies battle at Kawartha Downs on Sept. 15. The three-year-old pacing fillies do no return to Trillium Series action until Nov. 22 at Flamboro Downs.

Rideau Carleton Raceway fans will be treated to their next round of Ontario Sires Stakes excitement on Thursday, Sept. 17 when the gifted three-year-old trotting colts arrive in the nation’s capital for their fourth round of Gold Elimination action.
