OTTAWA, ON — Warrawee Needy made no mistakes at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Monday evening as he effortlessly claimed his second Gold Final trophy and fifth straight victory.
Starting from the trailing Post 9, driver Jody Jamieson landed the colt in sixth spot through the early going, which saw the other elimination winner, Best Ears, make a break while gunning for the lead from Post 5. Warrawee Nonsuch inherited the front end and led the field of two-year-old pacing colts to a sedate :28 opening quarter.
Racing by the grandstand for the first time, Jamieson sent Warrawee Needy to the front and the long-legged son of E Dees Cam effortlessly swept by the four colts lined up in front of him, reaching the :56.4 half marker with a three length lead. Under no urging from Jamieson Warrawee Needy continued to open up lengths on the field through the 1:24.2 three-quarters and on down the stretch. The colt swept under the wire 16 and three-quarter lengths ahead of his peers in a track record 1:52.1.
The mile also matched the Ontario Sires Stakes record for two-year-old pacing colts on a five-eighths mile track set by Just Asign To Me last fall at Windsor Raceway.
For the second time this season Jake Sully claimed the Gold Final runner-up spot, half a length ahead of third-place finisher Machapelo. Orse Power was fourth and Best Ears recovered from his early miscue to pick up the fifth and final piece of the $130,000 purse.
Jamieson, who currently leads all drivers in Canada in the money-earnings column, piloted Warrawee Needy to the victory for his father Carl Jamieson of Princeton, Tom Kyron of Toronto, breeder Dr. Michael Wilson of Rockwood and Floyd Marshall of Jarvis, ON.
Trainer Carl Jamieson purchased the son of E Dees Cam and Great Memories from last fall’s Canadian Open Yearling Sale for $20,000. Since his June 17 debut the colt — a half-brother to $266,664 winner Big Bay Point — has already earned $178,500 for his delighted owners.
The colt has been so dominant in Ontario Sires Stakes action this season, sweeping the first event and claiming an elimination win last week in spite of a minor bobble, that Rideau Carleton Raceway officials did not allow place or show wagering on Monday’s Gold Final.
Warrawee Needy will take a shot at a third Gold Final title when the freshman pacing colts take their high speed show to Flamboro Downs on Aug. 7. Before that the colt is eligible to Grand River Raceway’s $300,000 Battle of Waterloo, which Carl Jamieson has captured five times since its inception in 1998. The horseman’s most recent Battle of Waterloo triumph came in 2006 with another Warrawee Farm product, Warrawee Ideal.
For their next dose of Ontario Sires Stakes excitement, Rideau Carleton Raceway fans will be treated to Gold Elimination action from the three-year-old pacing fillies on Sunday, July 31.
