CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — After the buzz of anticipation leading up to the two-year-old pacing colt Gold Final at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening, watching Warrawee Needy capture the title with a gate-to-wire effort was almost anti-climactic.
Starting from Post 4 the E Dees Cam son and driver Jody Jamieson sailed away from the starting gate and reached the opening eighth in :13.2. The pair was followed by the other victor from last week’s elimination round, Jake Sully, but there was a comfortable cushion between Jamieson’s helmet and the pocket sitter’s nose.
Facing no pressure, Moffat resident Jamieson set a pedestrian pace, reaching the quarter in :28.1 and the half in :57.1. Orse Power attempted a rally up the outside, but could not get within three lengths of the leader.
With a little encouragement from driver Aaron Byron, Jake Sully narrowed the gap between his nose and Jamieson’s helmet heading for the 1:24.3 three-quarters and was still in the picture at the 1:38.1 seven-eighths, but Warrawee Needy easily drew away to a two and three-quarter length victory in 1:52.2.
Finishing second, Jake Sully was the only horse within hailing range of the winner. Third-place finisher Caddy Jeff was more than 11 lengths off the pace.
So heavy were the expectations weighing on Warrawee Needy’s sizeable shoulders that no show wagering was permitted in the race.
Princeton resident Carl Jamieson trains Warrawee Needy for his partners Tom Kyron of Toronto, Floyd Marshall of Jarvis and the colt’s breeder Dr. Michael Wilson of Rockwood, ON. The horseman purchased the half-brother to $265,704 winner Big Bay Point from last fall’s Canadian Open Yearling Sale for a modest $20,000. With wins in his first three starts the colt has already returned $93,500 and his 1:51.4 effort in last week’s Gold Elimination is the fastest mile clocked by a two-year-old in North America so far this season.
The talented Warrawee Needy and his freshman pacing colt peers now head to Rideau Carleton Raceway on Monday, July 11 for the second stop on their Gold Series tour. Ontario Sires Stakes excitement also returns to Mohawk Racetrack on July 11 with the second Gold Eliminations of the season for the two-year-old pacing fillies.
