REXDALE, ON — Was It A Dream bounced back from a lacklustre effort in the elimination round to score his second straight $130,000 Gold Final win at Woodbine Racetrack on Friday evening.

The two-year-old trotting colt and driver Paul MacDonell sprinted off the starting gate from Post 8 and were on top by half a length at the :28.3 opening quarter. MacDonell permitted Mr. Ontario to go by heading for the midway point in the mile, but had Was It A Dream back on top before the pair reached the :58.4 half. Was It A Dream trotted unchallenged to the 1:28.4 three-quarters and then dug in down the stretch to hold off a late charge from Majestic Son and Dr. Robert Johns and score the half length victory in 1:57.4.

Elimination winner Majestic Son finished second from Post 10 and Dr Robert Johns was right beside him in third for trainer Anders Wolden and his partner Kathrine Moi of Moffat.

The win marked Was It A Dream’s second Gold Final triumph and his seventh winner’s circle appearance in 12 starts. The Striking Sahbra son squeaked into Friday’s final off a fifth-place finish in the Oct. 28 elimination where he made an early break and then fought his way back into the top five from an 18 length deficit.

In spite of last week’s error, Woodbine Racetrack fans sent Was It A Dream off as their top choice in the Gold Final and he returned $3.80 to win, $3.00 to place and $2.40 to show. Second choice Majestic Son paid a $4.60 dividend on each place wager and a $3.20 return on a show voucher and third choice Dr. Robert Johns delivered a $3.40 show pay out.

The Was It A Dream – Majestic Son exactor was worth $20.20 and adding Dr. Robert Johns on for a triactor play earned fans $66.90.

Paula Wellwood trains Was It A Dream for Wellwood Stables Inc. of Cambridge and Paul MacDonell Racing Stable of Guelph. The partners acquired the colt for $47,000 from last November’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale and have banked $495,646 on his behalf, with the lucrative Super Final still to come.

The win propelled Was It A Dream into second in the division standings with a total of 184 points, 46 points behind division leader Majestic Son. The top 10 point earners will return to Woodbine Racetrack next Saturday, Nov. 12 for their season finale, part of the $2.4 million Super Final program.

Ontario Sires Stakes regular season action wraps up at the Rexdale oval tomorrow evening (Saturday) with a $130,000 Gold Final for the exciting two-year-old pacing colts.
