GLOUCESTER, ON — A pair of heavily favoured American sired fillies delivered the goods in Trillium Series action at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Thursday evening.
She’s A Great Lady winner Appleoosa Hanover kicked the evening off with an impressive five length romp in the first $39,617 division. The two-year-old pacing filly and driver Jody Jamieson fired straight to the front from Post 5, laid down fractions of :29, :58.3 and 1:27.4 and then cruised home to the 1:57 victory.
Iwishihadbaytsim circled up from the back of the pack to finish second, while pocket sitter P L Angel claimed the third-place finisher’s share.
The win marked Appleoosa Hanover’s fifth visit to the winner’s circle in 11 starts and boosted the Western Hanover daughter’s freshman earnings to $462,102. Princeton resident Carl Jamieson trains the talented young pacer for his partners Joanne Morrison of Beeton and Thomas Kyron of Etobicoke. The trio anted up a mere $32,000 US for the filly at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale.
Another daughter of Western Hanover claimed the second Trillium Series division as Yankee Augusta extended her win streak to four with a 1:57.1 front end effort.
Leaving from Post 2, Sylvain Filion guided Yankee Augusta through fractions of :27.4, :58 and 1:28 before sailing down the stretch to the two and one-quarter length victory over Spun Sugar and Secret Grin.
Dan Creighton trains Yankee Augusta for Ross Holmes’s The Masters Stable of Ilderton. Holmes acquired the filly for $50,000 US at the 2005 Lexington Select Sale and through eight starts Yankee Augusta boasts a record of five wins and one third for earnings of $134,609. She recorded a 1:52.3 personal best in the slop at Lexington, Kentucky’s historic Red Mile in a division of The Bluegrass Stake on Sept. 28.
The two-year-old pacing fillies have one Trillium event left on their calendar, Nov. 3 at Woodbine Racetrack, while Thursday’s event marked the end of Rideau Carleton Raceway’s 2006 Ontario Sires Stakes season.
Ottawa and area fans were treated to 14 exceptional nights of racing from the province’s top pacers and trotters this season, including track record performances by three-year-old pacing colt Doonbeg and sophomore trotting colt Majestic Son. The Ontario Sires Stakes program will return to the nation’s capital in 2007 with a fresh crop of talented youngsters eager to make their own mark in Rideau Carleton Raceway’s history books.
