WINDSOR, ON — Red Star Biggirl roared onto the Ontario Sires Stakes scene last week with both barrels blazing and in Sunday’s Gold Final the three-year-old pacing filly proved that she is the real deal with a track record performance over the Windsor Raceway oval.
In last week’s elimination the western invader rocked around the Windsor oval on the front end to an eight length score in 1:52.1. Lined up against the cream of the Ontario-sired crop on Sunday Red Star Biggirl and driver Allan Cullen wasted no time claiming the lead from Post 1, hitting the quarter pole in a hair raising :26.1.
Cullen backed things off considerably en route to the :56.3 half, but once she had gained her breath, Red Star Biggirl quickly resumed the lively tempo and hit the three-quarters in 1:24.1. With Draconian Promise hot on her heels and two-time Gold Final champion In Trepid Water mounting an attack from the outside, Cullen asked Red Star Biggirl for a bigger gear and the Grinfromeartoear lass responded with a :27.2 last quarter that landed her at the wire in a track record 1:51.3. The win carved one-fifth of a second off the standard set by Ontario Sires Stakes sweetheart Invitro in 2004.
Draconian Promise delivered a personal best effort to claim second-place, just one and one-quarter lengths back, and Lets Talk Turkey circled a tiring In Trepid Water to finish third, six lengths behind the winner.
Robert Merschback has trained Red Star Biggirl since she arrived in Ontario from Edmonton’s Northlands Park in mid-June. Prior to making the move Red Star Biggirl, bred and owned by Robert Murphy of Surrey, BC, captured a leg and the final of the Compass Rose at Northlands in May and the final of the Delta Pace at Fraser Downs in March.
Sunday’s victory boosts Red Star Biggirl’s 2006 resume to six wins, three thirds, two seconds and earnings of $192,398 in 11 starts. The first foal of $160,732 winner Lucky Big Girl was undefeated through five starts as a two-year-old, capturing three legs and the Final of the BC Breeders Stakes at Fraser Downs.
Red Star Biggirl will have an opportunity to defend her Gold Final crown on Aug. 5 at Flamboro Downs, but before that the three-year-old pacing fillies will test their skills in the Canadian Breeders Championship eliminations at Mohawk Racetrack on July 21.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement will return to Windsor Raceway next Sunday, July 16 when the border oval lays out the welcome mat for the two-year-old trotting fillies in their second Gold Series event.
