TORONTO, ON — Western Silk extended her undefeated streak in Ontario Sires Stakes company to four on Thursday evening, with a trademark late burst that propelled her to a one length victory in Gold Elimination action at Woodbine Racetrack.
Using a formula that has propelled the three-year-old pacing filly to $1.2 million in lifetime earnings, driver Mark MacDonald allowed Western Silk to coast away from Post 6, and the pair was nestled in fifth on the rail when stablemate Bay Girl and driver Phil Hudon muscled their way to a :13 opening eighth. Bay Girl pressed on to a :27.1 quarter, but was quickly under pressure from Grassroots champion Putnam Mackenzie, who reached the front before the :55.2 half.
MacDonald moved Western Silk off the rail soon after Mario Baillargeon made his move with Putnam Mackenzie, so while the Grassroots filly enjoyed her moment in the limelight en route to the 1:22.3 three-quarters, she was soon facing the dual threat of Bay Girl from the pocket and Western Silk from the outside.
Bay Girl was able to reel in Putnam Mackenzie before the fillies reached the halfway mark in the stretch, but she was no match for Western Silk, whose fierce finishing kick saw her roar through the final strides to a one length victory in 1:51.
Bay Girl picked up the second-place share of the $40,000 Gold Elimination purse, while Putnam Mackenzie posted her second third-place result against the province’s elite fillies. Only one filly, Misty Moonstone, was eliminated from the 11-horse field. The other 10 finishers will return to Woodbine for the last $130,000 Gold Final of their careers next Friday, Nov. 5.
Casie Coleman trains both Western Silk and Bay Girl, and the Cambridge, ON resident shares ownership of the division leader with Tom Hill of Lancashire, GB. Michael, Sam and Pat Sergi of Canton, NY own runner-up Bay Girl.
Thursday’s triumph was Western Silk’s ninth through 13 starts this season. The daughter of Western Terror and Extemporaneous also boasts one second and two thirds, her only off the board finish coming in her Oct. 2 Breeders Crown Elimination at Pocono Downs where she finished fifth. In addition to capturing two Gold Final and two Gold Elimination trophies this season, the gifted distaffer also triumphed in the historic Jugette at the Delaware, OH Fairgrounds in September and the $666,000 Fan Hanover at Mohawk Racetrack in June.
Cambridge, ON resident MacDonald will send Western Silk after her third sophomore Gold Final title from Post 5 in next week’s $130,000 contest. Bay Girl will be handicapped by the outside Post 10, while reigning Gold Final champion Tiz To Dream, who finished seventh in Thursday’s contest, gets Post 8.
