WINDSOR, ON — Windsong Eva earned her second straight Trillium Series victory with a late stretch sprint at Windsor Raceway on Wednesday evening.

With McGregor resident Don Rankin, Jr. at the helm, Windsong Eva eased away from Post 3 in the first $35,524 Trillium Series split and landed in fourth spot on the rail. When fan favourites A Fiesty Affair and Brad Forward reached the quarter pole in :27, Rankin and Windsong Eva were six and a half lengths off the pace.

Forward backed off the tempo through the second stage of the race, reaching the half in :57.3, and the fillies that had been trailing A Fiesty Affair by more than two lengths were able to close the gap. Still sitting fourth, Windsong Eva was just four and a half lengths behind the pacesetter at the halfway marker.

Heading toward the 1:25.4 three-quarters Southwind Piaya and driver Jason Brewer stepped off the rail from third, so Rankin opted to follow along behind them with Windsong Eva, and turning for home the pair were still fourth, but only two and one-quarter lengths off the pace. A strong finishing kick propelled Windsong Eva past the leaders and earned her a neck victory in 1:55.1. A Fiesty Affair had to settle for second, while Bootscootnfloozie also closed well to earn the third-place finisher’s share.

Trainer Bill Cass of Milton and John Craig of North York share ownership on Windsong Eva, who pushed her sophomore earnings over $100,000 with the victory. Through 22 starts the Rambaran daughter has posted four wins, two seconds and four thirds. Wednesday’s victory marked the second time in just over a month that Windsong Eva has bested A Fiesty Affair to earn a Trillium Series trophy.

In the second split, Jason Brewer employed a very different strategy to earn Call Me Yours her first Trillium Series victory. Starting from Post 1, Brewer allowed Call Me Yours to float off the gate and was sitting fifth when Slomotion hit the quarter in :26.1, but he did not sit for long. Well before the :55 half, Call Me Yours had driven up the outside to take command and the Your Nemesis daughter was three lengths ahead of her peers by the 1:23.2 three-quarters.

Turning for home Brewer and Call Me Yours had a five length lead, and they coasted home four length winners in a smart 1:53.4. St Lads Seraph closed well to finish second, catching a tiring Yankee Pica, who spent most of the mile on the outside.

Tavistock resident Stephen Gillard bred, owns and trains Call Me Yours, who has accumulated seven wins and four thirds in 20 starts this season for earnings of $93,731.

Trillium Series action will return to Windsor Raceway on Sunday, Nov. 30, when the two-year-old trotting fillies come to battle at the border oval in the final event of the 2008 Ontario Sires Stakes season.
