WINDSOR, ON — Windsor Raceway kicks off an exciting Ontario Sires Stakes season this Sunday at 6:30 pm with two Gold Eliminations for the talented three-year-old pacing fillies.
Among the 15 youngsters who will grace Windsor’s oval on Sunday are a trio from local trainer Bob McIntosh’s barn. The Windsor resident will start Spider Cam from Post Position 7 in the sixth race, Miss Frizzle from Post 3 in Race 9 and Lady Graceful from Post 4 in the ninth.
Although she heads into the race with just a pair of qualifiers under her belt, McIntosh expects Lady Graceful to quickly return to the form she showed at two when she captured two Gold Finals and finished third in the division standings.
“She is just starting up, but she’s got a little back class from last year,” says McIntosh, who trains the Camluck daughter for Bob Waxman of Ancaster. “She qualified good in Toronto on a bad day (May 3) so she should be set and ready for the year.”
Unlike Lady Graceful, Miss Frizzle already has nine starts under her belt this year. The Camluck filly, bred and owned by McIntosh, Larry Pollard of Harrow and Dwight Stacey of Mitchell, posted a trio of runner-up finishes in the Princess Series at Mohawk Racetrack in recent weeks and McIntosh expects her to be a significant player in the finish of the second elimination on Sunday.
“She is a real consistent filly. She put in a good effort in the Princess Series Final and I’d look for her to be a factor,” says McIntosh, who was the top trainer in the Ontario Sires Stakes program last season. “She’s a real sweetheart to be around and never gives a bad effort. I think she will quietly make a fair chunk of money this year if she stays healthy.”
Miss Frizzle earned $43,206 in OSS competition at two, much less than Lady Graceful’s $200,396, but she has already banked $63,725 from three wins, four seconds and a third in her nine starts this spring.
Spider Cam will carry the McIntosh flag in the first elimination and her trainer is hoping for an improved performance from the daughter of Camluck and Arachniphobia.
“She’s not a bad filly, but she was having a little trouble getting around the turns so we did a little work on her,” he says. “She has lots of grit and lots of go.”
Spider Cam, owned by McIntosh, Leo Beaudoin of Amherstburg and 1164822 Ontario Limited of McGregor, will face tough competition in the sixth race from Angel In Disguise. The division runner-up last season, Angel In Disguise is trained by McIntosh’s brother Doug of Wheatley and will start from the advantageous Post 1.
In addition to Angel In Disguise, Spider Cam will face Armbro Wallflower from Post 5. A Grassroots Series regular at two, Armbro Wallflower boasts the quickest early season mile of the 15 pacing fillies entered in Sunday’s contest. The Village Jasper daughter, trained by Mark Steacy of Lansdowne for his partners Stan Klemencic of Trenton and David Reid of Kingston, clocked a 1:54.4 victory in a Hippodrome de Montreal race on May 3.
The top four finishers from each elimination, plus one fifth-place finisher, will advance to the May 19 Gold Final, worth $130,000. The top five finishers in each elimination will also earn points toward the season ending $300,000 Super Final.
Windsor Raceway’s Sunday evening card gets under way at 6:30 pm. The three-year-old pacing fillies raise the curtain on their 2002 Gold season in Races 6 and 9.
