CLINTON, ON — Clinton Raceway will be over run with pacing colts again this weekend when the two-year-olds arrive at the popular half-mile oval eager to display their burgeoning skills in 10 Grassroots divisions.

Sunday’s event is the second of six Grassroots events on the colts’ schedule this summer, and Acceptable Risk will be looking to score a second victory for new owners David Morrissey of Ailsa Craig and Daniel McCann and William Woodburn of Parkhill. The trio acquired the Intrepid Seelster son last week, just days after his July 2 triumph in the Grassroots season opener at Hanover Raceway.

“I saw him win up in Hanover and he was quite impressive looking,” recalls Morrissey. “And it looks like Intrepid Seelster is getting off to a good start.”

Morrissey approached breeder Fred Drouillard and the pair struck a deal that included leaving Acceptable Risk in Drouillard’s care for the short term. Windsor resident Drouillard will send the half-brother to $116,340 winner Fred’s Good Friday out from Post 5 in Sunday’s eighth race, and Morrissey hopes driver Randy Fritz can work out a trip similar to the one he engineered in Hanover.

“It would be better to have the one-hole, but it’s better than the seven,” says the pragmatic Morrissey. “He had no problems up in Hanover.”

At Hanover Fritz eased the colt off the gate from Post 4 and sat in fourth spot through the opening quarter. Heading toward the half Acceptable Risk powered to the front, where he carved the remaining fractions on his way to a four and a half length win in 2:01.1.

Morrissey and his partners intend to concentrate on the Grassroots this season and are looking forward to seeing the colt in action at their local oval this Sunday.

“We’ll be there, that’s for sure,” says the long time horseman. “He’s a good looking colt, we just hope he stays healthy and sound.”

Among the colts Acceptable Risk will tackle in Sunday’s eighth race is Seas In Me, a 1:59 winner at Windsor Raceway on July 8, who will start from the trailing Post 8. The Island Fantasy son is trained by owner-breeder Bob McIntosh of La Salle, whose stable has earned almost $2 million through the first six months of the year.

Also making his Grassroots debut in the eighth race is Everybody’s Pal, a full brother to former Ontario Sires Stakes star Fish My Pal ($389,897), who will go after the lion’s share of the $15,000 Grassroots purse from Post 3. Breeder Ken Houston of Harriston, trainer Richard McGlynn of Mount Forest, Todd Struthers of Holyrood and Robert Sinclair of Elmira own the young pacer, who has a pair of overnight starts under his belt.

Clinton Raceway’s Sunday afternoon matinee gets under way at 1:30 pm, with the two-year-old pacing colts flexing their muscles in Races 3 through 12.
