FRASERVILLE, ON — Oaklea Omega gave her local owners a thrill when she captured her Trillium Series division on Tuesday afternoon, circling the Kawartha Downs oval in a smart 2:02.1.
Trotting off the starting gate from Post 3, driver Dave Wall sent the two-year-old trotting filly straight to the front. Through fractions of :31.2, 1:02.1 and 1:32.1 the pair never faced a challenge, cruising under the wire one length up on pocket-sitter CH Meadow Miss and 11 lengths ahead of Tyrone Abee, who is owned by breeder Dave Boyle of Bowmanville and trainer Robert McIntosh Stables Inc. of LaSalle.
Owned by trainer John Bax’s Parkhill Stud Farm of Peterborough, Brilo Farms of Sharon, Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry and Venture K Stable of Little Britain, Oaklea Omega has launched her freshman campaign in impressive fashion. Making her debut in the Gold Series season opener at Mohawk Racetrack on July 5, the Balanced Image daughter claimed a 2:00.2 victory. Back at Mohawk for the $130,000 Gold Final one week later Oaklea Omega and Hall of Fame horseman Wall trotted into third in a 1:58 mile, just one a three-quarter lengths behind the winner.
Tuesday’s victory boosted the filly’s bank balance to $36,402, repaying, with interest, the $28,000 her owners spent acquiring her from the Forest City Yearling Sale last fall.
Bax also claimed a victory in the fourth Trillium Series division with Gramola Grande. The Mr Lavec daughter and driver Doug Hie opted for a front end strategy to claim their second straight 2:02.4 victory over the Kawartha Downs oval. Strikingly Luvable finished six and a half lengths back in second and Tracey’s Memory was another length back in third.
Gramola Grande, owned by breeders Glengate Farms of Campbellville, Ariel Stables of North York and Bax’s Parkhill Stud Farm, was a winner in the Grassroots season opener at Kawartha on July 12. A $50,000 purchase at the Forest City Sale, Gramola Grande has made a dent in her purchase price with earnings of $14,607 through two starts.
Grassroots winner Pure Ivory scored the fastest win of the five Trillium Series divisions on Tuesday, cruising to a 2:01.1 score in Race 2. The Striking Sahbra daughter and driver Steve Condren sat behind pacesetter Arlanda Hanover through fractions of :30, 1:00.3 and 1:31.2 before sprinting down the stretch to the one and a quarter length victory. Sophie Soleil closed hard to earn the second-place share of the $14,214 purse and relegate Arlanda Hanover to third.
Milton resident Condren shares ownership on Pure Ivory with breeder Harry Rutherford of Mount Pleasant and Jerry Vanboekel of Bright.
After making a break in the July 12 Grassroots event, Bernice Daniece was on her best behaviour Tuesday and managed to eke out a neck win over St Lads Calcium and favourite Keystone Merlot in the first Trillium division.
Gwendolyn McNair of Walkerton bred and owns Bernice Daniece and her son Gregg McNair trains the Berndt Hanover daughter. Jim McClure was in the race bike for her 2:03.1 victory.
The other Trillium division saw American-bred filly Highly Organized best her Ontario-sired peers by a margin of five lengths. The Garland Lobell daughter and driver Jason Gilchrist sat off the pace through the early fractions and then circled three-wide at the three-quarter mark to take control and power home to the 2:01.4 victory over favourite Helen’s Melons and Windsong Carnie. The filly is trained by Dr. Garth Henry for owner Dr. Ruth Irving of Russell.
The two-year-old trotting fillies make their second Trillium Series start on Aug. 10 at Hanover Raceway, while the Ontario Sires Stakes program returns to Kawartha Downs on Tuesday, Aug. 9 with Grassroots action for the program’s premier performers, the three-year-old pacing colts.
