CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Was It A Dream extended his win streak to five with an impressive victory in Gold Final action at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening.
The two-year-old trotting colt and driver Paul MacDonell sat in he middle of the pack as pacesetter Chosen Voyageur led the field of 10 through fractions of :27.4, :57.2 and 1:27.1. Heading into the last turn MacDonell hit the accelerator and Was It A Dream easily circled the leaders to establish a one and a half length lead by the time he turned for home. At the wire the Striking Sahbra colt had added another quarter length to his margin of victory as he stopped the clock at 1:57.
Breaking Benjamin and Yorktown Gunner closed like freight trains from eighth and ninth to claim the second and third-place shares of the $130,000 Gold Final purse.
Trained by Paula Wellwood for Wellwood Stables Inc. of Cambridge and MacDonell Racing Stable of Guelph, Was It A Dream has been flawless since capturing his Champlain division at Mohawk on Sept. 5. The young trotter also posted wins in his elimination and the Final of the inaugural William Wellwood Stake, named in honour of Paula Wellwood’s father, and last week’s Gold Elimination.
A $47,000 US acquisition at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale, Was It A Dream started his provincial career in the Grassroots season opener at Hiawatha Horse Park on July 14 where he scored a 2:04.2 victory in spite of suffering interference in the first quarter. In his first stab at the Gold Series, Was It A Dream made a break over Grand River Raceway’s half-mile oval and failed to qualify for the final. However, on Aug. 21 at Rideau Carleton Raceway the colt was steady as a rock, finishing third in his Gold Elimination and coming back the following week to claim third prize in the Gold Final.
Mohawk Racetrack fans sent Was It A Dream off as their top choice in Monday’s sixth race and the colt delivered his fans $2.80 on each win voucher, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Long shot Breaking Benjamin returned $16.20 to place and $8.80 to show, while fifth choice Yorktown Gunner paid $11.60 to show.
The exactor was worth $87.60 and correctly selecting the top three finishers earned fans $762.00 on a triactor wager.
Monday’s victory moved Was It A Dream from ninth place in the division standings into fourth place, assuring him a berth in the Nov. 12 Super Final. The two-year-old trotting colts’ last opportunity to gather points toward a spot in the lucrative post season event comes Oct. 28 at Woodbine Racetrack.
Monday’s event wrapped up the 2005 Ontario Sires Stakes season at Mohawk Racetrack, as the action gets set to shift back to the Woodbine Racetrack oval on Friday, Oct. 21, with Gold Eliminations for the exciting three-year-old pacing colts.
