SUDBURY, ON — Wayne Henry shipped five three-year-old trotting fillies to Sudbury Downs on Saturday evening and hauled home two Grassroots trophies and a pair of fourth-place cheques for his efforts.
The Arthur resident kicked off the second Grassroots event on the fillies schedule with a six length win aboard heavy favourite Natashas San. The pair led from start to finish, clocking fractions of :30.4, 1:02.3 and 1:33.1 en route to the 2:03.1 triumph over Incredibly Elegant and Highnmighty.
Henry shares ownership on the San Pellegrino daughter with his partners in the Henry Stable of Arthur and James Laverty of Sauble Beach. The win was the filly’s third of the season and her first in Grassroots action.
Crafting a similar trip in the second division with CS R Hope landed Henry his second Grassroots trophy of the night. Owned by the Henry Stable, the CR Renegade daughter cruised to the fastest mile of the five divisions, stopping the clock at 2:02.4 and hitting the wire three lengths ahead of In For A Treat and Bullville Peachy. CS R Hope was also a winner in the Grassroots season opener at Grand River Raceway on May 22 and currently sits atop the division standings with a perfect score of 100 points.
Veteran reinsman Bill O’Donnell also recorded a Grassroots double on Saturday. The Acton resident piloted Enlighten Me to a 2:05.4 win in the fifth race on behalf of trainer Dennis MacPherson and owners Renzo and Chiara Longo of Mississauga, and then coached his own protg, Fancy N Diamonds, to a 2:03.3 win in Race 7.
Enlighten Me reeled in pacesetter Hurrikane St Patty to earn her first lifetime win in her seventh racing appearance. The Angus Hall miss hit the wire two lengths up on Celsius Hanover and seven lengths ahead of a tiring Hurrikane St Patty.
Fancy N Diamonds hit the wire one length ahead of favourite Gramola Grande and Strikinresemblance and redeemed herself for the late break she made in the Grassroots season opener that saw her set back from first to second. O’Donnell trains and drives the Striking Sahbra miss for Mimade Stable of Lexington, KY and Richard Rader of Nicholasville, KY.
The final Grassroots division saw Sophie Soleil recover from an early break that left her more than 18 lengths off the pace to post her first Grassroots victory. The Berndt Hanover daughter and driver Stephen Byron inched their way back into contention throughout the race and hit the wire one length ahead of Warzone and Girl’s Legacy in 2:04.2. Lynden resident Fred Drouillard owns and trains Sophie Soleil.
The sophomore trotting fillies make their third Grassroots start at Western Fair Raceway on June 28 while the two-year-old trotting fillies will make their way to Sudbury Downs on Saturday, June 24 for their Trillium Series debut.
