WOODSTOCK, ON — Caught Off Guard steamed around the Woodstock Raceway half-mile on Saturday afternoon to capture the fastest of 10 Grassroots divisions for the three-year-old pacing colts.
Owned by Alexander Polishuk of London and Mike Shunock of Toronto, Caught Off Guard hit the wire one length ahead of Billy Kay and three lengths up on Wingandaprayer in a smart 1:55.4. The win was the Grinfromeartoear son’s second in Grassroots action, and maintains his share of top spot in the division standings with four events remaining in the regular season.
Dorchester resident Jason Libby trains Caught Off Guard and Mark MacDonald piloted the colt to the victory in Race 10.
MacDonald picked up a trio of wins on the Grassroots card at Woodstock on Saturday, also reaching the winner’s circle in Races 2 and 8. Canada’s leading reinsman steered Banana Joes Bar to his second Grassroots win in Race 2 on behalf of trainer John Ciarpelli and owner Anne Della Maestra of Waterdown. The Northern Luck colt stopped the Woodstock teletimer at 1:56.2, one length ahead of Dextra Effort and Presidential Mark.
In Race 8 MacDonald and Actor made winning from Post 8 look easy, cruising to a four length victory over Eternal Isle and fan favourite Snap Out Of It in 1:56.4. The Cambridge resident shares ownership on Astreos son Actor with trainer Brian MacInnis of Stoney Creek and Hal Bevan of Charlottetown, PEI.
Driver Trevor Henry also had a hot set of hands on Saturday, landing in front of the grandstand with four different Grassroots winners. The Arthur resident kicked off his sparkling afternoon with a five and three-quarter length romp in the first race with Sauble Justy. The long shot hit the wire in a personal best 1:57.2 for owner and trainer Fred Maguire of Ailsa Craig. Favourite Justice Cam settled for second and Sudburysatrdaynite was third in the $15,000 contest.
Three races later Henry eked out a neck decision with favourite Albert In The City, extending the Albert Albert son’s win streak to six. Henry handles driving duties on Albert In The City for trainer Paul Taylor and owners Glenview Livestock Ltd. Of Wallenstein. Youretheluckyone had to settle for second in the 1:58.3 mile, while Yulovepebblebeach, owned by Thomas Lawson of London, finished third.
A 1:58.1 win aboard Indeed Oneill in Race 9 clinched Henry’s hat trick, and the reinsman added one more in the last division with Englebert.
Gary Kingshott trains Indeed Oneill for Randall Bennett of Toronto. The win was the Intrepid Seelster son’s second straight in 17 starts this season. Apaches Banker and R M Karisma rounded out the top three.
Henry and Englebert recorded the 1:57.1 win over Scotian Delight and favourite Acceptable Risk for trainer Alvin Bowman and his partner Judy Campbell of Stayner.
The other Grassroots divisions went to Bend It in 1:56.3, Fantasy Beau in 1:57.3 and Rare Copy in 1:57.2.
The three-year-old pacing colts make their third Grassroots start of the season on July 1 at Hanover Raceway, while Ontario Sires Stakes excitement returns to Woodstock Raceway on Saturday, July 8 with the Grassroots debut of the two-year-old pacing fillies.
