DUNDAS, ON — Sixty-six sophomore pacing fillies put their skills to the test in Grassroots action at Flamboro Downs on Wednesday evening and Whitesand Scarlet emerged as the fastest of the lot with a 1:54.1 triumph in Race 1.
Jason Brewer teamed the Million Dollar Cam daughter to the impressive six length victory over Dress To Suggest and Funny Lady, while fan favourite Pompous Pleasure settled for sixth after making an early break. The win was Whitesand Scarlet’s first through 11 starts this season, and bumped her lifetime earnings to $62,210 for owner and trainer James Crowley of Norwood.
Ben Wallace trainee Spun Sugar picked up her third win, and first Grassroots victory, of the season with a 1:55 score in Race 6. The Camluck miss, owned by Bradley Grant of Milton, was piloted to the two and a half length win over Hazel May by Mario Baillargeon. Crazy She Calls Me, owned by Offshore Racing of Burlington, Aaron Waxman of Brantford, trainer Duane Marfisi of Guelph and Alan Alber of Thornhill, picked up the third-place finisher’s share of the $15,000 purse.
Twin B Diva and Northern Blue were the only fillies able to replicate the victories they scored in the May 22 Grassroots season opener.
With Cambridge resident Jody Jamieson in the race bike, Twin B Diva dominated the Race 8 field, carving all the fractions and cruising home to a nine and three-quarter length win in 1:54.3. Playin With Magic and Amchabec rounded out the top three.
Jim Ainsworth trains Camluck daughter Twin B Diva for his partners Martwest Racing Stable of Mississauga, breeder Twinbrook Limited of Embro and William Boden of Vancouver, BC. The Sarnia resident and Jamieson made a second appearance in the winner’s circle one race later when Jamieson piloted Admired Beauty to a 1:56 come from behind score over Runaway Jade and Tara Artiste.
The mile was a new lifetime mark for Admired Beauty, who is owned by Larry Ainsworth of Petrolia and Vancouver resident Boden. The daughter of Apaches Fame and former Grassroots winner Armbro Teacher was making her first start in the provincial program.
Northern Blue posted her second straight Grassroots win in the final division, going gate-to-wire in 1:56.1. Phil Hudon piloted the Northern Luck daughter to the win over Just Her Way and Jill And Wendy for trainer Kevin Benn and Dennis Chadwick of Napanee.
Benn and Hudon also teamed up for a second Grassroots victory, landing Spocks Luck in the winner’s circle after Race 4. Like her stablemate, Spocks Luck controlled the pace and hit the wire in 1:56, putting an end to Secret Grin’s three race win streak. Shake Yer Booty rounded out the top three.
Benn and Chadwick also own Spocks Luck, who now boasts a record of four wins, one second and one third through 10 starts this season. Wednesday’s victory lowered the Camluck daughter’s personal best by a full second.
The other Grassroots divisions went to On The Choo Choo in 1:56.3 and Dreamfair Eternal in 1:55.4.
The three-year-old pacing fillies make their third Grassroots start on July 13 at Grand River Raceway, while the Ontario Sires Stakes program does not return to Flamboro Downs until August 8, when the outstanding three-year-old pacing colts arrive in town for a Grassroots battle.
