CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — After failing to make the Final in the Gold Series season opener, last year’s division champion Carolyn AS stepped back into the spotlight at Mohawk Racetrack on Friday evening with an impressive victory in the second Gold Final of the three-year-old trotting filly season.

Leaving from Post 7, Carolyn AS sat on the outside through the entire mile. The Striking Sahbra daughter sat on the outside at the back of the pack as J M Aggie took the fillies to a :28 opening quarter and a :58.3 half. She sat on the outside in the middle of the pack as reigning Gold Final champion Caught My Eye powered up to take control of the race just before the 1:27.4 three-quarters, and she was still sitting on the outside as the fillies straightened out and driver Jack Moiseyev asked her to shift into high gear for the stretch battle.

A :28.3 last quarter helped propel Carolyn AS to the one and three-quarter length victory over Matriarch, who is owned by Ted Nadhazi of Acton, and Caught My Eye, who just held off J M Aggie to finish third. Dynamic Lavec, who drew in off the also eligible list when Shipps Foxylady was scratched out of the race, rounded out the top five.

The 1:57 mile was a personal best for Carolyn AS, shaving one-fifth of a second off the time she recorded winning last week’s elimination. Through three sophomore starts the filly now has two wins and one fourth to her credit for earnings of $88,058. Lifetime, the Anette Lorentzon trainee has banked $334,744.

ACL Stuteri Inc. of Paris, KY and Bill Justice of Lexington, KY share ownership on Carolyn AS, who missed the final of the first Gold Series when she went off stride in the stretch during the June 23 elimination at Georgian Downs.

Her impressive comeback in last week’s elimination convinced Mohawk fans to send her off as the favourite in Friday’s final and Carolyn AS returned their faith with a $4.40 win pay out, a $3.30 place voucher and a $2.90 show return. Second choice Matriarch returned $3.90 to place and $3.30 to show and fourth choice Caught My Eye delivered a $2.90 show return.

Carolyn AS will have to wait a month before she can defend her Gold Final title. The three-year-old trotting fillies do not return to Gold Series action until Aug. 12 at Flamboro Downs. Meanwhile, Mohawk Racetrack fans will witness the provincial debut of the two-year-old pacing colts and two-year-old pacing fillies on Sunday, July 15 and Monday, July 16.
