DUNDAS, ON — Flamboro Downs hosted five Gold Eliminations on Sunday evening, and three-year-old trotting filly Carolyn AS set the excitement level high with an Ontario Sires Stakes record equalling performance in the very first one.
Jack Moiseyev guided Carolyn AS away from Post 4 and dropped her on the rail in fifth as Tymal Francesca swept to a :27.4 opening quarter. Tymal Francesca continued to lead the field of six through the :57.1 half, but Moiseyev sent Carolyn AS up the outside heading for the 1:27.1 three-quarters and had her positioned second when the fillies turned for home.
Sprinting down the stretch, Carolyn AS reeled in Tymal Francesca to score a half length victory in 1:57.2. J M Aggie was two more lengths back in third and Constance Hall was 13 lengths back in fourth.
The mile equalled the Ontario Sires Stakes record set by Pure Ivory last season at Western Fair Raceway and gave Carolyn AS her fifth straight victory. The only flaw in the Angus Hall daughter’s sophomore season came in a June 23 Gold Elimination at Georgian Downs where she made a late break and finished fourth.
ACL Stuteri Inc. of Paris, KY and Bill Justice of Lexington, KY own Carolyn AS, and Anette Lorentzon trains the freshman trotting filly division champion.
The second trotting filly elimination saw Trevor Henry take Tymal Timeout straight to the front from Post 1 and cruise home a two length winner in 1:59.3. Emerald Whisper and Movin Over battled it out for second and third, and Summer Audit landed the final spot in next Sunday’s $130,000 Gold Final.
Wayne Henry trains Tymal Timeout for his partners in the Henry Stable of Arthur and Daniel McCann of Parkhill. The Royal Strength lass now has two wins and two seconds to her credit through eight sophomore starts. As a two-year-old she finished second to Carolyn AS in the division earnings race.
Reigning Gold Final champion Deuce Seelster scored his fourth straight victory in the first two-year-old pacing colt Gold Elimination, powering around the final turn and down the stretch to a three length victory in 1:55.3. The Mohegan Pan finished second and Carter In Motion was 14 lengths back in third.
Paul MacDonell guided Deuce Seelster to his fourth impressive victory for trainer Darren James McCall and owner Katherine Bardis of Sacramento, CA. The closest the Western Maverick colt’s peers have been to him at the wire was one and one-quarter lengths, and that was in his very first start.
Keystone Horatio grabbed his second win in the second elimination, a race that saw just four colts go to the post when Macnamarra and Ratings Hanover were scratched due to sickness.
Leaving from Post 2, driver Randy Waples sent Keystone Horatio straight to the front and the Rustler Hanover son cruised home a three and three-quarter length winner in 1:56.3. Samurai Seelster was second and Roman Rocks rounded out the top three.
George Hempt of Camp Hill, PA bred and owns Keystone Horatio and Campbellville resident John Kopas handles training duties on the winner of $72,790.
The final two-year-old pacing colt Gold Elimination saw Romantic Thriller step off a front end victory in 1:55.4, hitting the wire one and three-quarter lengths ahead of Go West Young Cam and Keep In Control.
It was the first win in four tries for the Mach Three son, trained by Susanne Kerwood for Enviro Stables Ltd. of Miami, FL. Bruce Richardson piloted Romantic Thriller to the victory.
The top four finishers from the three-year-old trotting filly eliminations and the top three finishers from the two-year-old pacing colt battles will join the three-year-old trotting colts for Gold Final action next Sunday, Aug. 19. The three Gold Finals will warm fans up for the main event on the 1:30 pm program, Flamboro Downs’s signature race, the Confederation Cup.
