CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — The precocious Cumin First delivered an effortless victory at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening, sweeping around the Campbellville oval to her second straight Gold Final title.
From Post 7, driver Rick Zeron of Oakville floated Cumin First off the starting gate and waited for Daylon Mystique to reach the opening quarter in :28.3. Zeron then opted to move the heavy favourite a little earlier than he did in her first three starts, and had the Striking Sahbra daughter a comfortable one and a half lengths ahead of the field when they reached the :59.2 half.
Easter Bonnet took a run at the leader down the backstretch, but ran out of steam before the 1:29.4 three-quarters, causing Elusive Desire to circle out three-wide in her effort to end Cumin First’s Gold Final reign. However, neither filly was able to keep up with Cumin First down the stretch as she pulled away to her fourth straight victory in a personal best 1:58.1. Elusive Desire’s bold move earned her the second-place finisher’s share of the $120,000 purse, two and one-quarter lengths behind the winner, with Easter Bonnet hot on her heels in third.
Frank O’Reilly of Orton trains Cumin First for breeder Dr. Ruth Irving of Russell, Mary Anne Lauzon of Russell, Jim Fielding of Toronto and John Jesson of Tillsonburg. Through four starts the talented youngster boasts two Gold Elimination wins and two Gold Final titles for earnings of $160,000.
Stonebridge Diva delivered an impressive effort in the $20,000 Gold Consolation, stopping the clock in a smart 1:57.3. The Angus Hall miss and driver Randy Waples landed in sixth spot through the early going, watching Trinity Krysta step out to a :27.4 opening quarter, then moved up the outside behind Pajama Land.
Trinity Krysta was still in control at the :58.2 half, but by the 1:28.1 three-quarters Pajama Land had replaced her on the front end and Stonebridge Diva was still accelerating up the outside. Milton resident Waples had Stonebridge Diva on top by one and three-quarter lengths by the time they turned for home, and the filly showed some grit to hang on in the stretch for a half length victory in 1:57.3.
Paycheck Lavec closed like a rocket to claim the runner-up spot, leaving Pajama Land seven length to the rear in third.
Gro Formia trains Stonebridge Diva for breeder Angie Stiller of Arva and Robert Kauffman of New Albany, OH. A hard charging fourth in last week’s elimination, her first lifetime start, the full sister to $492,879 winner Stonebridge Diablo will be looking to give Cumin First a run for her money in the third Gold Series event on Aug. 16 at Kawartha Downs.
